    Huatulco, Mexico

If you’ve ever wanted to visit the perfect little Mexican resort village, Huatulco is it. We’ve talked about coming here to the Club Med several times, even though we don’t even know if it still exists, but we’ve never made it. Finally we sail on a ship that has Huatulco as a port and that’s where we spent a good part of today.

Gene, the cruise director, had said that this was a pretty sail-in, and since we didn’t arrive until 8:00, we saw it from the gym. He was absolutely right. The mountains grew up around a perfect little beach and small town. The pier extended out into the bay, and as we approached we could see the town becoming a hive of activity, anxiously awaiting us. Although lots and lots of people rushed to disembark for their tours, we had a leisurely morning having breakfast and getting ready for the day.

We finally went ashore at about 9:30, and although the temperature had been forecast for a high of 84, we could already feel that it was warmer than that. We passed the dozens of offers for tours and taxis and just wandered through the small town, rather more of a village, looking in windows and greeting locals. After sending the requisite postcard to our granddaughter, we ran into our friend Jeff who reminded us that the local authorities had built a mile-long walkway through a valley between this village and the next town, so that’s where we headed next.

By now it was headed into the high 80’s, and the walk over the hill in bright sun was getting rather uncomfortable. It’s a beautiful walk, though, with plumeria and ficus trees but very little shade. After about twenty minutes we arrived at the other town, whose name we still don’t know. It was much larger and seemed to be a typical Mexican town, with families enjoying small restaurants, shops open even on this holiday, and a church on the square with a beautifully painted ceiling. Since this is less a tourist town, there weren’t so many people trying to sell us taxi rides and jewelry, but it was just lovely to walk through.

After we’d seen what we wanted to, we headed back to the path between the hills, leading us again to Huatulco, where we found a small cafe for nachos and margaritas. By that time, it was about 1:00 and our phones (using the restaurant’s free wi-fi) said it was now 90 degrees - thank heaven for a shady restaurant! All-aboard was early today, 1:30, with sailaway at 2:00. We left almost on the minute and now we’re headed to Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, where we’ll arrive tomorrow morning at 10:00.

    Was the town Tapachula?

  3. Captains Pieter Bos and Henk Draper are the current captains of the NODM. As their schedules read right now, Capt. Bos will be your captain in early 2017. Enjoy that cruise!

    Thanks. That great.

  4. We see that captain Bos was on the Nordam earlier in the year. We are going on it on Jan 4 and was wondering if he might be on it again. I met my wife on the Princendam when he was captain in 2003 and on the statendam and 2006.

  5. Throwing in my two cents. We are 4 star and we get the 50% off. So that exploration cafe anything. I buy cans of Diet Coke there. 50% off. Werher you have a proper mini bar or they are on the desk anything room service puts in is 1/2 price. I have certain things sent back on the first day and ask that others be replaced. No discounts at ANY bars unless advertised. Just remember to buy your wine packages.

  6. Batumi is a wonderful place. We spent 3 days there two years ago. Georgia is very very pro west. Why would they not be as a portion of the country is occupied by Russia. In soviet times Batumi was not even an important port.

I is a great place to walk around. The Muslim section has some nice Turkish restaurants but you will get better. I recommend you find the local heart attack on a plate Ajara katchupuri. Quite a dish.

Enjoy a place few people get to visit. Oh, good restaurants will take you CC.

  7. The only thing sold in the USA was the Tim tams. No other arnotts cookies or crackers are sold in the USA. Even though Sao's should be. I believe that they are no longer being sold under the PF name. Did not do well. World market and a few others are selling them as a direct import.

Campbell took control of the company in the 90s. My wife is of what was the controlling family.

  8. So glad we sailed with you and not the legally blond blog, we did not like the attitude on that blog, sorry but we will not go on reading it, we prefer to stay with your positive and super enjoyable blog.

Was it that bad? At that time there were 2 other cruise critic blogs as well as some others. Most interestingly was that they were aware of her. Mad for some interesting.

It goes downhill pretty fast. Sorry to hear that it's been edited after the fact. I liked the honesty even if it bordered on the rude. She basically spent a fortune to get a floating closet. Maybe I'll Reread it as well.

  10. I was on a po Australia ship and the comic was like Eddie Murphy. I went up to him and said he could not do his act on a us ship. He said that's true.

In 2002 I was on the Princendam sailing down the coast or west Africa. There was a couple that did some sort of dance routine where they had a telephone and made a call to God. Because of outrage on the ship they were taken off in Accra Ghana and fired from HAL. What upset many of the pax was not the call to God. But that God answered. Playing Gods voice was a no no. Who knew.
