Royal Caribbean Announces Voluntary Suspension of Cruising

MIAMI, March 13, 2020 – Today Royal Caribbean Cruises LTD. announced that it is suspending cruising in the United States for 30 days.

We understand the gravity of the public health crisis confronting the country. And this is our part to play. So, beginning at midnight tonight, we are pausing the fleet’s US sailings for 30 days.

We are reaching out to our guests to help them work through this disruption to their vacations, and we are truly sorry for their inconvenience. We are also communicating with our crew to work out the issues this decision presents for them. We know this adds great stress to our guests, employees and crew, and we are working to minimize the disruption.

Cruises that depart US ports before midnight tonight and international cruises will operate their scheduled itineraries. US ships already at sea will finish their itineraries as planned.

Our business is providing great vacations and creating great memories. We look forward to getting back to work as soon as we can.

So, what options did they give you for cruise refund?  We were due to sail this Sunday and called Captain's Club and were told they have no knowledge of cancellations???????

They told me I would get an email. My cruise was free (Heroes Cruise 3/27). Still no email and the chat people are “gathering details” and had no further information for me. Their poor front line staff were blindsided like us. I’m just going to wait for them to sort it out but if someone is leaving soon I’d call and get to the bottom of it.

Thank you for posting that questionnaire.

It's different from what people have been posting here.

It states that if a person answers yes, they will get an additional review but will be allowed to sail unless they have an "illness of international health concern."

That's a little different than if you have a prescription bottle on your person you'll have to forfeit your cruise fare.

Agreed it’s a different tone  but I think the potential for people to get denied boarding for health issues that are fully controlled (eg diabetes) is still high.

The form wasn’t online last night so I’m guessing they got a BUNCH of questions that the phone reps were not prepared to answer. It’s so fluid I think it’s best to still take a wait and see approach ...

I live just over an hour from the LA where I hope to be cruising out of in 14 days but for those who have a ways to travel for their trips (and $$$ invested)  I hope Celebrity can provide a more defined answers on illness exclusions.

    Safe travels all!!

    Hello All,

TA here - have gotten a lot of questions pertaining to this new policy.   Celebrity is aware that some people might not be truthful with the policy and have been told to look for prescription medications at the pier.  They also will be signing a form stating they don't have anything, on risk of being denied boarding with forfeit of fare.

I know no one wants to risk not being able to to go on their vacation - however I strongly recommend everyone abide by this new policy, as you risk not only being denied boarding, but losing your money as well.  While I agree that the policy is vague at best, should you take any daily medication for any reason I'd consider that to fall under "chronic" and cancel.

Excellent advice! Thank you for sharing your insight with us.

Celebrity needs to refund the cruise fare and not future credit. No one knows how long this will last.

I think it would be very nice of them if they did that for people caught up in this mess BUT my point is they don’t have to. We as customers entered into an agreement with Celebrity were all of this is clearly spelled out. Offering a FCC is  an act of goodwill on their behalf whether we think it’s good enough or not.

Per Celebrity contract they don’t have to:

“d) Carrier shall have the right to comply with any orders, recommendations, or directions whatsoever given by any governmental entity or by persons purporting to act with such authority and such compliance shall not be deemed a breach of this Agreement entitling the Passenger to assert any claim for liability, compensation or refund.“

    in addition...

”e. Carrier may also change accommodations, alter or cancel any activities of, deny service of alcohol to, confine to a stateroom or quarantine, search the stateroom, property or baggage of any Passenger, change a Passenger’s Land Tour, disembark or refuse to embark the Passenger and/or any Passenger responsible for any minor Passenger, or restrain any Passenger at any time, without liability, at the risk and expense of the Passenger, when in the sole opinion of Carrier or Captain the Passenger’s conduct or presence, or that of any minor for whom the Passenger is responsible, is believed to present a possible danger, security risk or be detrimental to himself or the health, welfare, comfort or enjoyment of others, or is in violation of any provision of this Agreement.”

Again another thoughtless decision and comment by the LLP crew without clarification.  If you cannot Cruise  how can one use FCC.  $ should be refunded.  No doctor would sign the form as written.

    I don’t think it’s thoughtless...

Its just for the next 30 days which we all know could change depending on how much footing this virus gets here in the US.

Those who have a compromised system are at a disadvantage right now but those of us who aren’t still have the ability to proceed with life while taking extra precautions.

What I think is thoughtless is that airlines are not screening passengers (JetBlue) https://www.google.com/amp/s/people.com/health/passenger-who-boarded-flight-after-testing-positive-for-coronavirus-gets-lifetime-ban-from-jetblue/amp/

So we are in agreement, at least for this thread, that if a person is under 70 (won't have a doctor's note), has diabetes, even if controlled, even if well-controlled, they will be denied boarding.

Yes - I’m basing it off my chat last night with the rep. If I fell into that category I would not even bother going to the port.

Im supposed to be on a free Heroes cruise on 3/27 out of LA. If it doesn’t get cancelled I will post on here what they ask and how the process goes now that they have implemented all these additional screening procedures.

I guess I'm hung up on the "severe, chronic".

I know Fouremco interprets that as severe or chronic and he may be right.  But I also read it as severe AND chronic.

I got the distinct impression from the rep that if asked at the port if you have any of the x,y,z conditions they would deny boarding. I don’t think they want to deal with all the medications and complications that could arise if something were to go wrong.

I’m guessing it was either close up shop for a few months like some other lines or continue sailing with passengers who pose the least amount of risk to their operations. Just my thoughts on it

So they'll be just asking people?

    That seems strange, doesn't it?

I guess they think people 69 and under are honest, but once you turn 70 you're not to be trusted to tell the truth and need a doctor's note.

The rep told me they would be asking people via a questionnaire at the port day of embarkation. He wouldn’t give it to me in advance so I don’t know what exactly is in it. I suppose someone could lie but then I assume if something bad happens and they find out the person lied they are probably going to stick that person with any expenses surrounding their treatment/evacuation. Just my guess...

I also asked if there was a list of examples of diseases and he rattled this off: chronic heart, lung, liver, or kidney disease, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, or cancer. Then he said to look at what CDC says are chronic medical conditions.

after the phone call I checked the website and saw he was reading directly from it. Today when I looked the language has changed to this:

    • Boarding will be denied to any person with a severe, chronic medical condition, including those specified by the CDC. Guests of all ages will be screened prior to boarding, regarding underlying health issues that may prevent them from sailing.

Wait....Are you talking about under 70s now?

For instance, the Type II diabetes people are speaking of.  If the person is under 70, will the cruiseline ask if they have this, this, this, or this?

I also wonder about the word "severe."  I don't have diabetes, but I would think that a person whose diabetes is under control would, of course, be considered chronic, but severe?

I called and asked this exact question last night. We have a friend with a diabetic child Who wanted to join our cruise and they said regardless of age, if anyone has any of those conditions they would be denied boarding. It’s not just 70+.

  12. As of today - still cruising (2-day cruise in about 2 weeks and a Caribbean cruise the end of April). I am under 40/healthy, I have ample PTO to cover any possible quarantines, nobody to worry about at home (fur baby is well taken care of), and my cruises were basically free. With that said I’m paying very close attention to everything and if the risks seem too high for my situation I’d be out $400 total. I cannot be in a better place at this point.

The Carnival Panorama locked down everyone scheduled to disembark and made the new passengers book hotels for the night, because one disembarking passengers showed symptoms. So it's not just Princess now, and the new imminent cruise screening procedures will supposedly include screening at disembarkation, so any time any ship has a passenger with a high temperature, the ship is likely to be put on lockdown until that person is tested and cleared.

Carnival Corp owns both Carnival and Princess cruise lines.

Bummer!  I've already called them once and they said that they see it and don't know why it isn't showing up.  I did the "Link" for all of us but that didn't change anything.  How long ago did you book?  We just did this yesterday for the March 31st one so hopefully you booked one of the early ones and mine will eventually show up.

Mine showed up as soon as I got off the phone. Got the first room on Sunday and then got the second on Tuesday. Both times they showed up right away. Try all the last names if you have different ones.

For those of you booked on a HERO sailing, are you able to see the cruise on your Captain's Club page as an upcoming cruise?  I can see the reservation on the app, but when I log in on my computer, it shows I have no upcoming cruises.   I'd like to be able to start the online check in process if I can.  The app won't let me do the check in so I'm hoping that they aren't all set for us to do this yet and I just need to be patient.

Works for us on the app and the website.
