  1. we are just hitting double digits for our departure. Looking forward to seeing some reviews of the NCL Sun northbound and southbound, with dailies and menus, etc., etc. Cannot wait!

    Hello..when r u on the

sun..we leave August 7th...I've been living on the computer!! Got any great websites!!

  2. I was hoping you would answer..that's what I thought..both tours in Kenai are good I understand..do u have a favorite? Also..can we drop off our luggage before we go on these excursions? Going on NCL Sun.

  3. Wondering if Kenai..major marine in Seward would be similar to whale watching in Icy Point with glacial winds? Are these excursions so different we should do both? Inquiring minds need to know...thanks!!

  4. Thanks for the relpies - those both look like what I'm looking for. The Panasonic especially interests me for the price, but I'm seeing reviews that say it can only be charged in the camera. Is that accurate? I always like to have a spare battery so one can be in use while the other is charging.... If that's not possible I might as well just stick with my phone.

Amazon has an external charger for about 20 dollars with batteries...I bought that so I can bring extra charged battery with me..now I need to get more memory cards..

  5. We just purchased a Panasonic Lumix Zs 50 from Costco..point and shoot for about your price. We haven't used it enough to tell you it has fabulous pics yet.

  6. I've done a little research (ok, a lot, I'm a big nerd). This is my list of shops and things to do/see in Skagway. (I've also got lists for Juneau and Ketchikan if anyone is interested).

For the crafty: Aurora Yarns - 7th & Broadway; Rushin' Tailor's Quilt Shop - 370 Third Avenue

Klondike Doughboy - 326 Third Avenue (supposed to have great fry bread and lots of tasty things to take home)

Skaguay News Depot - 264 Broadway (books!)

The Train Shoppe - 231 Second Avenue (shop of the White Pass/Yukon Railway)

Alaska Geographic Shop - 291 Second Avenue (might be inside the Train Shoppe)

Kone Kompany - Broadway between 4th & 5th (ice cream!)

Skagway Museum and Archives - 7th & Spring

At the Visitor's Center (2nd & Broadway), they do free, short tours throughout the day. The three that I made a note of are:

Jeff Smiths Parlor Museum (30 minutes)

Women of Skagway Tour (45 minutes)

Historic District Tours - topics vary (45 minutes)

This website will give you a little more info on the tours: https://www.nps.gov/klgo/planyourvisit/ranger-programs.htm

Im interested in all the shopping and places to see!!! Thanks

  7. I've been watching my spa suite for a month and no change to the minimum bid. The actual price on the website has decreased as well. So keep that in mind. I'm almost at the point where it makes more sense to add a few dollars and buy it outright for the guaranteed room. Just watch the prices!

Hey Sandy..where are you watching those prices?

  8. Yes...it was your post on the roll call that prompted me to call!! We're 4ppl and on the 12pm cruise with Shawn.

Currently weighing Prince William Sound cruise vs Kenai Fjord cruise.

So glad...what other things have you planned? Can't wait!

  9. Just booked a whale watching trip with Glacier Winds based on feedback on CC. They take 6 people max. Call directly to book (saving online booking fee).

We did that also! Very nice people and we can't wait till August! Bought me a new camera and dreaming of flukes and a whale breaching right beside the boat!

  10. Sounds like you may have a dud.

You do hear some whirring when the lens is moving but I've been more than happy with the pictures I take....

..hate to sound stupid..but that is 100 per person for entire cruise..right?

  12. I would use the cameras battery charger to charge all your batteries. If you have an Amazon account your should get free delivery. I have purchased my extra batteries from Amazon. As far as memory cards Best Buy on occasion has some great deals on memory cards. I generally don't have anything smaller than 16GB. Right now they have a pretty good deal on SanDisk "Pixtor" memory cards.

    Marty

Hi Marty...so charge batteries and take with me ..how do I know what kind of memory card to get...was just going to get same one that came with camera..what do u recommend? Will be taking videos.

  13. Though there was some premium gear, there was nothing magical. The results come from years of teaching myself photography, shooting in raw, spending time processing each image carefully.

    But the gear used were:

    Renting gear is great.

My only tip would be to read a few photography books, learn composition and exposure.

Not sure which Lumix you got -- It's just a brand. Within Lumix, the FZ2500 is a very capable mid-sized sensor camera, and would give you a good range for Alaska.

Yeah..great gear..I just got the one from Costco...Lumix DMC-ZS50 inexpensive...but hopefully will do the job...no aspirations of being as good as you...will take any tips!! If the whales cooperate I'd love to get a great breech pic for the hubs! Other than cruises will probably use for grandkids pics.

  14. Which one did you get? The iAuto option (intelligent auto) is nice but if you learn the basics of photography, you'll be able to do a lot more - just play with it up until cruise time!

And I have a monopod that I use for distance shots

I got the DMC-Zs50..from Costco Tell me about the monopod and what I use it for.

  15. By no means am I an expert but the reviews look good and if the image stabilization is any good that's a very good feature.

The reviews say you can charge the battery while still in the camera. Nice feature. But it doesn't come with a USB cable. I would plan on using the battery charger while on the ship. Do you pack a small power strip?

I would suggest at least an extra battery and additional memory cards.

Do i charge a few batteries in camera..then take with me for excursions? I assume they will hold the charge. Yes we take a power strip....I'm addicted to too much that needs to be charged. Anyone have a good site to get extra batteries and memory you'll share..or is amazon ok?
  16. Make sure you understand what OIS, or Optical Image Stabilization can and cannot do - the BIGGEST misconception is that it will "freeze" fast moving subjects at slower shutter speeds. It does anything but. It allows you to capture sharp images of static subjects at slower speeds. Moving objects will be equally blurry or streaky—and in some cases blurrier/shakier with the IS turned on. If you use a mono or tripod, you usually won't need to have the IS turned on - and keep in mind that it also will eat battery life.

I plan to use zoom mode for landscapes mostly. We are going on a private whale watching excursion...should I leave camera on auto or try for a video?
