Looks like Jewel got the menu as scheduled. Still waiting to hear back from Enchantment.

This post says sail away is now 6pm: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?p=35605257

The port schedule says says 5pm.

Wow, cruisenfever! You managed to reply before the original post. Not sure how that happened.
In any case, was the Jewel refit date pushed up from the original May 2016 date?

I was impressed with how quickly Royal responded to my email asking when the new menus would be on the Brillance. It took less than an hour. I was emailed 12/2/12.
That's odd, I was just told 11/12/12 this morning.

I just got an update from RCLDining with the remaining ships:

I like the Space Shuttle names with the obvious exclusion of Atlantis (don't name a ship after something that is best known for sinking into the ocean) and Columbia (doesn't sound right):
Discovery of the Seas
Endeavour of the Seas (original name of LB)
Challenger of the Seas
Enterprise of the Seas

In somewhat related news, there is an article at http://dailygrill.com/wp-content/uploads/5-14-12-Flavor-The-Menu-2.pdf that interviews, among other chefs, Josef Jungwirth, Director of Culinary for Royal Caribbean International. There's two sections on Royal Caribbean, one near the beginning and one near the end, where he describes some of the techniques and equipment that they use. He talks about the Alto-Shaam combi ovens, ELRO pressure cookers, and sous vide meats.
Sailing on IOS in February. When did they say the new menu's would start?
RCLDining@rccl.com told me January for IoS, so we should have the new menu on our cruise in February. -
Thanks for all the replies! Fascinating!

Okay, so this is probably more of a "large boats" question then a cruise-specific question, but I figured that plenty of people here have watched ships dock. When the ships are docking, they usually come up along-side the pier using thrusters/azipods, and then are guided the rest of the way in using the ropes. My question is: how to they get the ropes from the ship to the dock?
In the following video, it looks like the ropes are just dropped in the water and then pulled up on the pier.
Are they actually using the wake from the azipods to push the ropes, were the ends of the rope connected to a thinner rope that can't be seen on the video, or is there some other method? Does anyone have better videos of this process?
Of course, none of this has ANY impact on my upcoming first cruise, but as an engineer, I'm curious. Maneuvering a large boat the size of a city block into a tiny concrete wharf is an amazing feat.
-
^I guess I should've said "directly affects their bottom line in the short term". I agree that not discouraging anti-social behavior that negatively affects other passengers will, in the long run, discourage repeat cruisers.
-
Just curious.. Why are they allowed to block sidewalks in such large group? It definitely makes much harder for other cruisers to enjoy the Promenade.
It's not like they chartered the whole ship.
In reading these boards, it seems that the one thing that RCI staff are not is confrontational. Whether it's chair hogs, seat savers, elevator-button pushers, stairwell sitters, kids in the solarium, or formal-night-flip-flop-and-t-shirt wearers, the staff seems afraid to do anything lest they lose out on tips (the only rule they seem to enforce regularly is the alcohol in luggage rule, which affects their bottom line).

That sunrise thunderstorm picture is stunning!

Perhaps I misunderstood but after reading all the postings by folks on all the threads about new menus and the fact that they brought in special staff and chefs and that the MDR staff was aphrenshive .... it sounded like some big food changes beside the presentation of the paper menus..
The food was new. The three dining rooms had the same new food, but different paper menu styles.
-
If someone could suggest an easy way for me to post the 43 pictures of the menus and food pictures, I would be much appreciative. Then you could see more details about each item.
You can upload multiple images easily to http://imageshack.us/ (just hold CTRL or SHIFT to select multiple images in the "Open" dialogue box). Once your images are uploaded, click on the thumbnails of all the images you want to appear here, which will cause an orange border to appear around each one. Once that is done, click on the "Get code for Forums" link on the right, and copy and paste the code from the first text box into a post here. Your images should all show up.

The Florida Power and Light plant located here attracts manatees in cold weather to its warm-water discharge. Florida Power provides an observation platform for viewing the mammals.
To get there from I-95 in Fort Lauderdale, take the S.R. 84 (SW 24th Street) exit and head east. Upon reaching the port itself, turn right at the water and proceed to the designated parking area.
Is this viewing area still there? This post was from 2009, but the only other information I was able to find says that the viewing area closed in the early 90s.

If your ship is in the midport section of the port (Terminals 18-29) there's nothing that's on the way from the airport as the route between the two is essentially one long exit ramp. If you're going to the Northport part of the port (Terminals 1-4) there's a Publix in the Harbour Shops off SE 17th St. That supermarket is about 3.25 miles out of the way if you're going to midport.
