  1. We were in St Thomas Sept 14th....one thing to be aware of, there is major road construction being conducted on the road from the cruise terminal to Red Hook ferry, so allow extra time for delays.

We had no problem on our way to Red Hook in the morning because we were on the road before the crews started working, however on our return taxi ride it was stop and go traffic many times. We took the 2 pm ferry back from St John to Red Hook and traffic and construction was HEAVY.

Also keep in mind that traffic is heavy in St Thomas pre working hours and from 5 pm on and I mean HEAVY!

Our day on St John at Trunk Bay was magical it was like heaven on earth! We can't wait to go back and explore more of the island.

If construction delays, or heavy traffic, how much time should one allow between Red Hook and getting back to the Ship?

  2. A taxi is a little different. The are all safari-type taxis so they hold a fair number of people (8 - 20+). If you have a group of people, this is the way to go. It's easy and if you can take over an entire taxi they'll take you anywhere you want to go. If you are just two people joining a taxi that is filling for an island tour, that can be nice as well, but you will likely just get the highlights and not get off the beaten path that you could in a taxi where you've rented the entire vehicle. For example, last year we took a group of 12 to St. John, rented a taxi for the day and ended up in Coral Bay for lunch at Shipwreck Landing. You won't get that on a general island tour.

Hi Host Anne, I have a family group of 6 who will be stopping in St. Thomas via cruise ship and we will be making or way over to St. John. We plan to be on the 9 AM ferry, and eventhough the ship does not sail till 6 PM, we would probably like to be back on the ship around 4-4:30 PM. Originally, I just thought that maybe we would all go to the beach, but others might enjoy an island tour. So, I was wondering, is there time for all of us to do an island tour, and have snorkle time? Your comment above mentioned renting a private taxi to go of the beaten path. I think we might prefer what you suggest as opposed to a general island tour.

So, can all 6 of us fit in such a taxi if we were to hire privately?

    What might be the cost?

What do we ask for so that we do see more of the island as you describe, and not find ourselves with just the general tour?

How do we go about hiring such a taxi? Where do we find them?

After such a tour, what time do you think we'd finally get to the beach for some snorkle time, or would there be time to go to the beach?

    Thanks!

  3. I have a family group of 6, and we're interested in taking the taxi from our ship, the Caribbean Princess in November, to take the Red Hook ferry to St. John. Can 6 fit into a taxi, or will we need to take two taxi? Same question for St. John, after we arrive and take at taxi to Trunk Bay, will we get by with taking 1 taxi, or do we need two. Appreciate any info on this matter, thanks.

  4. Somehow I can't equate Denmark with pickpockets! Just a lesson for all of us to be very aware of our surroundings.QUOTE]

Yes, ironically, for such a safe overall city, pickpockets do seem to be a concern. I recall seeing signs at Nyhavn warning about pickpockets. I too am in disbelief that his is a problem, as Copenhagen and Denmark are extremely safe. But, do take care, and becareful to guard against such petty theifs.

  5. Just wondering if anyone has seen Arnotts Tim Tams for sale in USA - specifically Fort Lauderdale or Los Angeles?

Would love to buy some before we get on the ship or get some in LA for the week we will be spending there. My DH just loves Tim Tams with a cup of coffee. I don't think you can bring them in from australia.

I've never seen Tim Tams untill I recently traveled to OZ, now I miss them. As far as I know, they are not available here unless there is some specialty store. Bring them with you.
