  1. Don't be worried :)

Yes, Casablanca is the 2nd worst port we have visited (after Alexandria) but as Nomad says get an excursion, many one here had said they are good. We just walked to the Mosque, which is very impressive but it's not the nicest walk along a prom we have had.

Gibraltar is great, so many options. Great shopping if you like that sort of thing. Taxi tour off the quayside for about £20 each, this gets you up the rock to see the Apes. Or if you want more time up there go on your own steam and catch the cable car up, this gives you the opportunity to see the caves and tunnels at your own pace.

Portimao is quite nice too. Turn right and walk 15 mins and you are in the old town,, nothing special but a nice place for a mooch around. Turn left and walk 20 mins to Priaha da rocha (sp) for the beach and a touristy seaside new town. Nice long beach here.

  2. Not sure which line, think it was HAL, back in the day there were waiters at the end of the buffet line who would take your tray and escort you to your table. Kind of like they used to escort you to your cabin.

They used to do this on the old Thomson Destiny too, a very civilised way of doing it. They then served fruit juices, tea, coffee and fresh toast. If you wanted more food you just joined the queue again.

On the Thomson Majesty one MDR is used like a buffet, they seat you first then you go and get your food, your preferred fruit juice is usually waiting for you when you return.

I wanted to go and upset the diagonal diners on the Arcadia, Mrs Holiday said "Don't you dare":mad:

  3. Agree about the Sulieymane Mosque, it's lovely and well worth the walk up the hill. It's quieter than the other places so a good place to visit in the afternoon.

My tip would be to do the major attractions you want to see first.

We queued before opening time at Hagia Sophia, and queued for about 40 mins to get in the Blue Mosque.

  4. Great review, thanks Linda.

Are they still using the bus park opposite the fire station in Civi?

That was supposed to be temporary for last year whilst they were doing the road works. It's a long way into the centre of town or the train station.

We walked it back to the ship from town and thought it was the right decision for us, we had Mum in wheelchair with us and that was a nightmare walk through the shopping district, Italians like to park across dropped kerbs :mad:

Hold out for the best price on your P&O, we booked 5 weeks before for our Arcadia North cape and Norway in July, the money we saved will buy a wine package and some trips :D

It fluctuated quite a bit, and has just gone back up.

If you want to know what cabins are left go to a TA's page that has a cruise club in Chesterfield ;) and go to price it up, click on the cabin grades that are not guarantee savers. You can get an idea of how many cabins are left.

  5. The Dream usually docks at the world trade centre terminal, this is about 10 minutes walk to the bottom of La Ramblas. If it docks at the main cruise terminal (would be very unusual) the port bus is €3.50 (AFAICR) return. That drops you at the bottom of Las Ramblas.

You would have to get the green line from Drassanes (It's just at the bottom of La Ramblas on the left) and change to the blue line at sants estacio.

I would agree with 28SAC and allow at least an hour.

If you are good walkers you could walk back to the Ship, going via the Arc de Triumphe, Mercat el Born, and maybe the old Cathedral, all are worth seeing.

  6. We didn't see it as we were on our way home from the event. It was a great day out.

For those that are interested, BBC north west are showing a programme about Cunard 8pm on Friday. It should be available on the iPlayer afterwards for those who don't live in the region.

Hope you are feeling better Dave.

  7. We think Africa is the best Thomson show too. I think Richard was taking the afternoon play to the majesty, he mentioned last year on the spirit that it was going to be introduced on other ships from this summer. There is always the fantastic muzik unlimited as well, we could listen to them all night.

  8. Cafe Jardin is nice for lunch. We did it a few times in April.

No Pizzas but there is a good salad bar and range of desserts.

It's mainly baguettes and other light snacks, the mushroom vol-u-vent is nice (and huge).

The one time we used Cafe Jardin in the evening we were not impressed, it was about 18 months ago, so it may have improved.

  9. Trouble is that Tui/ Thomson still charge 21st century prices for their 1980/90 ships. Maybe that's why many Thomson regulars are defecting to other cruise lines?

    That's so true.

We like Thomson for the staff and the entertainment, but other lines offer better ships and better food.

The entertainment we had on our last P&O was really good, the showteam were good and there was so much more variety than just one comedian a week.

Plenty of defectors on this forum. Although I bet many (like me) would not discount going back.

  10. All priced in £'s, you register a card when you embark, debit card is best because there is no extra charge, it's 2.5% if you use a credit card. Or you can deposit £200 in cash instead, and they refund at the end if needed or you top up as you go along.

Most people dress smart casual, eg open neck shirt and trousers for men, top and skirt or trousers for Ladies. Some wear Jeans and T-shirt, that's fine too.

Only requirement to dress up is Captains night, and if you don't want to wear a jacket and tie then that's Ok as long as you dine in the buffet not the main dining room.

Another vote for the trip with Cosol on St Lucia, it's a great day and as Dab says you end up snorkelling from the beach between the Pitons, how good is that!!

There are loads of good tips for the ports on the Thomson forum here, just use the search to look up the ports and you will find loads of good info from experienced cruisers.

    Welcome to the forum :)

  11. If you are not AI then the Porto Pi shopping centre has a Carrefour to stock up on cabin booze or anything you have forgotten to bring.

Turn left from the cruise terminal and walk on the main road, it's just around the bend and will take 10-15 minutes.
