  1. There are no free refills. You pay for each glass of soda in the dining room. You can bring as much soda or bottled water on board that you can carry on yourself for use in your cabin.

I don’t think you can bring it into the dining room. Free water in the dining room is not in bottles. There is a fee for bottled water.

Coffee can be ordered for free for room service. Coffee and tea are available free in the Lido 24 hours a day and are served at meal times in the dining room.

  2. We did the med on the Koningsdam last September. We are Canadian and there were a lot of Canadians, Americans and Australian as well as many Europeans. Thee was a wide range of age groups as well. We travelled with our 30 year old daughter and she never felt like she was surrounded by seniors. And she should know, she is a nurse in Long Term Care.

  3. I have been on both NCL and HAL and much prefer HAL. The cruise I took on NCL was a party, party, party. Lots of young people over drinking the first 2 days (there was a free drinks promo) then we hit rough seas and had hung over, vomiting young people. Overall I had a good cruise with lots to do but it was not the atmosphere I was looking for on a cruise.

There were no dance lessons on any cruise I have taken in the last 5 years. I think those are still on Cunard and Princess but I may be mistaken. On HAL I have seen card games being offered in the daily activities.

We don’t cruise for the wave pools, water slides and go carts but have never been bored on any cruise. We usually enjoy most music, game shows, movies and shows offered on a cruise.

  4. Interesting! In May, on Koningsdam, we traveled from Rome to Amsterdam doing 2 UK ports and we were not required to surrender our passports at any time. I wonder why you had to do so.

I’m not sure why. It was the UK authorities that boarded with us in Amsterdam and they took everyone’s passports while we were travelling to Dorset. IIRC they were probably returned after we left Gibraltar. We were given a receipt when we gave them over and had to present it to get them back.

  5. We travelled on HAL from Amsterdam to Rome. We had to surrender our passports before reaching the UK and they were returned to us before we reached Barcelona. So we did not need them for the ports in between. The ship usually announces before hand what you will need to take with you at the ports.
