  1. Very underhanded, changing the itinerary once it is too late for you to do anything about it.

We all understand the devastating effects of the weather in the Caribbean and don't need to be preached to as to why routes have been altered, but it is not unreasonable to expect them to notify people of the itinerary changes while they still have the option to cancel.

Exactly! This is all I was saying. I don't understand how people can get so angry when others have a different opinion than they do. We're allowed to be frustrated and we pay a lot of money to vacation. Just giving the option to opt out of the cruise after the change and before final payment is reasonable.

It's funny that so many get so upset, but if one were to subscribe to cable and were to receive 8 premium channels. They pay without any notice of a change. Then the cable company takes 5 of those premium channels away and puts 2 other ones in their place. They know about the changes and could allow consumers to cancel without penalty, but would lose business. So they wait a day and a half after the customer pays and isn't able to cancel. Would people be expected to just deal with it? Cable companies can and have lost deals with networks. Customers lose channels and some are in contracts and cannot get out of them. It doesn't mean it's right. They can be honest with customers by altering the channel package and allowing the customer to decide if they wish to cancel or continue with the new channel lineup.

  2. All I said is that it was a downgrade and changing right after final payment (30 hours to be exact) wasn't the best move. So many are so self righteous on these boards. People are entitled to their own opinion. Don't put words into my mouth because that's clearly not what I said. I feel it was a downgrade and think it was wrong to change it after final payment when they said we would have a change by the 3rd. That's it.

  3. Sorry, did you not hear of the TWO category 4 hurricanes that wiped half of the eastern Caribbean off the map a month ago? Perhaps you'd be happier with Cozumel and Port Canaveral?

Wow... I have actually donated to relief efforts. I can be empathetic to the islands as well as frustrated with the lack of communication. Apples and oranges. The part that bothered me is that the change came just over 24 hours after final payment.

Compared to the original itinerary, this is a downgrade. From 8 ports to 5 with the best ports cancelled. Also updating itinerary 2 days after final payment wasn't the best move either.

  5. We received $250 OBC by going through a TA. We had to make a change and it was no big deal at all. You literally hold while they call and make the changes and they email you a record of it. Sometimes NCL's prices are slightly higher than the prices of the big TA websites for the same exact cabins as well. Do a few searches and see what you find.

  6. Can anyone that has done this tell me about how are it is from the cruise port? Can you walk from port or do you have to take a taxi? Just a little nervous with all I am hearing about the security in Cozumel right now and we have the two little ones with us this time. Just trying to get an idea. Thanks!

We went with Carnival and it was not a good experience. It was raining and the kids no longer wanted to do the excursion. We were told by a Carnival rep off the ship that we could cancel where we were to meet (we were already off the ship). The rep from Dolphin Discovery would not allow us to though and said it was too late to cancel. So we went anyway.

It was raining so hard that one son wouldn't get in the water, my other son got in and right out. They sat under an umbrella the entire time. The rain was splashing salt water into our eyes. The experience was very limited. The package we bought was also supposed to include a few coves like stingrays, etc and snorkeling. Due to the weather they cancelled everything else. They had a limited buffet lunch. Picture packages were very expensive. We complained while there that we paid for options other than the dolphin experience and were told oh well.

So we took the taxi back to the port, did some shopping and got back on the ship to speak to someone at the excursion desk. They had to investigate and said they would get back to us. They verified everything we said was true by speaking to the man we met at the port for the excursion as well as the people running the excursion. So Carnival ended up refunding the excursion for both of our boys that did not participate at all and 50% of my husband and I. Although I would have liked to just cancel when I knew the weather was bad, I now know to cancel before getting off the ship to ensure policy is followed. Because we did go, I thought the refund amount was fair because paying almost $500 for 4 people was a bit ridiculous for what was received and even if the weather was better, I don't think I would book it again. We were on a back to back and Mr. Sancho's the week before in Cozumel was so much better!

  7. Just an idea... I ordered 2 NCL inflatable ships on eBay. They are 22" and sold as a set of 2. My offer of $7.50 was accepted plus $4 shipping. Not bad at all and will be so cute under the Christmas tree! I think I'll book an excursion and attach that and get each of them NCL gift cards to add to their cards for money for the arcades, ice cream, etc.

  8. Received an email today that it is Balcony Bonus Week and tried to have the Bonus added to my current booking. No luck. First, the representative had no knowledge of the offer. Then said it was not able to be combined with my current latitude offer and the choose up to 5 free offers. I really, think it should be combinable?

Any suggestions on get getting the extra bonus? Now, I am thinking about calling next week and talking to a different agent?

I'm not sure about being combinable with your Latitude offer, but it is with the choose 5 offer as seen on the home page.

  9. The Marriott Marquis' rate is double occupancy, with no charge for minor children. That's the salient point here. NCL's charging double for the room.

Exactly! Thank you! Some hotels charge a minimal charge for additional guests over 2, but this hotel doesn't so there isn't a reason for NCL to. If NCL wants to charge per person for everything, that is fine, but the rate should be $75 a person to equal the rate the hotel would charge me, not double the rate.

  10. Has anyone seen any promotions for new cardholders other than the standard 10,000 pts or $100 dollars? I have one when I applied I believe there was another 5,000 bonus when I applied. Just wondering if there was another promo before DH applies.

I just received an email this weekend for just 10,000 points. Both my husband and I both applied.

  11. Just remember that when you get a cash redemption (statement credit) on less than 25,000 points, you don't get a whole percent. 15,000 gets you $120 whereas it will get you $150 in OBC.

    Good to know. Thanks!

  12. You really need to look at the room rate details. Most hotel prices are based on double occupancy and the rate rules will state as such.

However, in my experience if you put in that there will be more than 2 occupants the room rate can/may be higher. I have also had a quoted rate be for up to 5 occupants in the room.

The rules are never the same from hotel to hotel; JMHO.

    Safe sailing al! :)

I stated that the rate online was with 4 occupants. There was no difference in price for the children online vs 2 occupants.

  13. Some years ago, I looked into booking a hotel room in Rome through a cruise line (not NCL), they quoted me the price and then it double because I was the only one in the room. I looked on line and what they were charging me was double what I could book the hotel for. When I called the cruise line, they said it was because they had a contract rate. I tried to explain that a contract rate should be lower than the rack rate, but they didn't seem to understand or care. I've never even looked at booking a hotel through a cruise line since then.

Crazy! Ours was double the rate I could get, then they would discount it the $100. Pretty shady...

  14. That's a ripoff! Since when do hotels charge PER PERSON??? It's per room! Are the kids young? Kids aren't normally charged to be in the hotel room with parents!

12 and 8. There was only the additional charge booking through NCL. Either way it would be a room with 2 beds.

It's fine if they charge per person, but it should be $75 per person to total the rate charged if I were to book it online myself. Then it could be discounted $100 and I would have booked it for $200.

It all worked out and I got a suite nearby for just $150 with taxes.

  15. I would guess that at least 90% of the hotels in America (maybe the world) charge per room, assuming 2 people. The cruise lines almost always charge per person. Same with transportation.

    Be aware.

By the way, at least in the past when we stayed there, the Marriott Marq is a great place to stay.

Thanks for the response! I'm aware now! We've only cruised with Princess and Carnival before. I think I was just taken aback by the difference in price online and NCL's price. We actually booked a different hotel.

  16. The discount is not misleading if there are only two people. $149 each for two is $298 but is then only $198 after the DV perk.

It is always a good idea to compare costs as you've discovered but that doesn't mean it is misleading since they do give the discount.

Maybe misleading was the wrong word. But for NCL to charge for the children, when the hotel doesn't, doesn't seem right in my opinion. They are the middle man simply booking the hotel and should not pocket the additional cost.

  17. I decided to look into the $100 discount on a pre or post-hotel stay that was part of the Distinctive Voyage promo.

I called NCL and they only book one hotel in New York City for this promo, the New York Marriott Marquis. I thought this was great because we wanted to stay in Times Square and I already had a tab open with this hotel rate on my laptop.

The agent let me know the hotel would be $149 per night for each of the 4 of us, 2 of which are children. So $600 for one night in the low season of January. She did say they would transfer us to the ship and take off $100, but this still seemed excessive. The rate for the hotel advertised online was $299 for all 4 of us without any discounts.

We ended up booking a suite across the street at the Double Tree Times Square for $150 including taxes and fees. We'll find out own way to the port! Not a big deal. We're fine booking our own hotel. I just thought the "discount" was misleading and a little comical, especially charging the full rate for the adults and children.
