  1. Will we receive any sort of reservation reminder in our stateroom?

You can actually arrange to have a reservation reminder in your stateroom, yes. Simply print the reservation confirmation that you have been sent, and take that with you on the cruise. In your stateroom, remove it from your suitcase and look at it. You will then have a reservation reminder in your stateroom.

  2. I would suggest that the fact that so

    many people responded
to help you understand your position might be an indicator that your cruise line might not be in the wrong. No-one here (most of us seasoned cruisers) is defending your cruise line...

You seem to be proud of the fact that you didn't understand what you were booking, stating that you

did indeed not read the terms and conditions, and I have no intention to do so now.

The thing is: If you don't read and understand what you're agreeing to when you hand over your money, you're in no position to

    assume
anything at all about what you think you're going to get.

    You say that you

disagree that a passenger and a cruise liner has an equal right to cancel a cruise...

In fact, if you admit that you haven't read the contract you've agreed to, you're not really in a position to disagree with what it says, or what rights it does or doesn't give you.

I think we all agree with you on one thing though:

    Life is too short
to spend regretting your mistakes. PLEASE try to learn from this, move on and - most importantly - enjoy your cruise.
  3. ...Wondering if frequent cruisers find it a bit repetitive if they cruise the same cruiselines' ships....

On the contrary. You'll see from my signature that I have a preferred cruise line.

I very much enjoy knowing where to find the 24-hr 'pub-style' O'Sheehans, knowing the various policies on drinks packages etc inside out, knowing when and where are the best times to get the best theatre seats, restaurant tables etc... I would feel quite lost on another line.

But that's just me... I don't like change very much.

  4. It sounds like a bit of waiting and patience....

There's no need. If there's one member of your party who is able to pop down the stairs and speak to the host, he will advise how you can access the dining room. At this time, ask for the extension number for the phone on his podium so that you can call if from the phone next to the elevators if you're ever stuck up there.

If there isn't someone who can pop down, use the telephone next to the elevators to contact restaurant reservations, they will either give you the extension number for the hosts desk or call them for you. Again, when you talk to the host, get the number for the podium to make the rest of your dining trips easier.

Hello, and welcome to CruiseCritic. You'll fit right in, we get quite a few posts like yours:

    1) Someone neglects to read or understand the terms and conditions that they agreed to, or doesn't understand how cruise bookings work.

    2) Something happens that they then perceive as an injustice (The price drops, the line makes changes, etc...)

    3) They come to CruiseCritic, go to the trouble of making an account, and post one angry and ill-informed diatribe.

    4) They then disappear from CruiseCritic, probably never even bothering to read the helpful comments.

OP, if you are reading this... I feel for you, I really do. It happened to my in-laws and they reacted the same way as you did. Think of it this way: Usually, up to final payment date, you and your cruise line can cancel your cruise and get a full refund. If you made a work-scheduling error, you could cancel without owing the line anything. So it only seems fair that the cruise line gets to do the same.

The line owes you nothing except your money back. The fact that they are prepared to go to such extraordinary lengths to appease you is, in fact, an example of exemplary customer service.

Your story about the positive customer experience you had from your line (but didn't understand/enjoy) is, in fact, a recommendation for them.

Take the refund, put a deposit on another cruise/line, use the rest of the money for something more timely, and pay off the balance when the final payment date comes. Try and put this behind you, and please have a wonderful vacation.

  6. Yeah that's the thing: My husband (Gold) and I (Platinum) have both done the tour before (when we were both Silver, by paying for it.)

He (Gold) doesn't want to do it again, and I (Platinum) want to take a friend (Bronze) with me - I'm not interested in doing it alone. It might be one of those 'see what happens on the day' things, depending on the Latitudes Representative/CruiseNext Salesman.

  7. Let's say that, having booked and paid and entered into a contract with MSC you...

...did a dummy booking and could book the cabin right beside ours for £200...
...more per person. Would you call them up with your credit card in your hand, insisting on paying the difference?

My guess is that you wouldn't, because you have a contract with MSC. You can hold that up and say "'this is what we agreed' - you can change what price you charge future buyers, but you can't change MY price."

The nature of a contract is that both parties get to hold each other to it - it's not a one-way thing.

It's a shame that you made the error of assuming that MSC operates on the same business model as EasyJet, but now you know for the future that different industries and companies have different business models.

    I think it's a shame that you've 'soured' your

    ...lovely relaxing first cruise.

by persuading yourself that you've been 'Financially penalised' somehow. The fact is, you're going to get exactly what you paid for, at the price you agreed to pay. If you didn't think that was a fair price.... you didn't have to pay it.

I recommend that you use the site I'm going to link here. (However, I suspect that CruiseCritic are going to block this link, so if it doesn't work, try Googling 'Cruise price drop alerts done right'.) It will help demonstrate how cruise prices go down as well as up... and hopefully help you pay the lowest possible price next time.

Please try and forget what everyone else paid, and get on with enjoying your cruise.

  8. I will keep spreading the word of your questionable business practices.

...by making vague statements amongst a group of seasoned cruisers who all suspect you just didn't read the offer properly...

    ...and then just disappearing forever....

  9. Hi everyone :)

We're a group of four friendly chaps coming over to the US in November. We've got a couple of nights in Miami before the cruise, and then we're off around the Western Caribbean with you all on the Getaway.

Looking forward to getting to know you all :)

    Sam, Dom, Fullick, and Francis.

  10. For me it's about putting everyone around me at their ease.

Whether someone is uncomfortable on their seat, feeling shy in a group, or awkwardly wondering about something they don't know how to ask... My priority is to try and make them feel comfortable.

So with the above examples I might fetch them a cushion, talk to them in a smaller group and introduce them, or just come straight out and answer that question I know they've got burning... The main thing is that everyone has a better time when everyone feels happy and comfortable together.

So it's not about trying to remember a 'thing that you can say', or turning the question around, or having a clever one-liner that puts them on the back foot: it's about realising that YOU are the person who has experience of this situation - this happens at least once on every cruise, you've been here before. If you use your confidence to answer that question early on, before it becomes an issue, you'll avoid having your nervousness build up and make it feel tougher to answer it when it comes.

  11. ...I only reached 77 points, but my Latitudes status is now Platinum.
I noticed that if you were only 1-3 points away from 80, they gave you platinum.

I'm exactly the same, I've just got to 77 points a few days ago, and I notice that I'm now Platinum.

It would seem as though, 'unofficially', they round up by three points. Does anyone have any further examples supporting or refuting this?
