  1. Hello! Do they still have the snorkels for sale on board the ships? If so, still 5 bucks?

    How about masks?

    I'll be on the Freedom.

    Thanks!!

We picked up ours from Costco before leaving. They have lasted years and come with us on just about every trip. Maybe a consideration for you?

  2. Do you have a reference for this?

I use immodium for my patients all the time, the only exception is if they have c. diff. Viruses are generally eliminated by the immune system, not mechanically. My gastroenterology buddy next door confirms there's no contraindication to anti-diarrhea meds in norovirus.

If I'm wrong I'd really like to know so I can stop giving the wrong advice. I hope you can point me to your source.

First hand reference without digging into my old books is the years I spent working with several physicians as a military medic, who all stated the same thing.

A quick online search for Loperamide Mechanisim of Action (Medical name for Immoium for those that are wondering) came up with this.

From drugbank . ca : In vitro and animal studies show that Loperamide acts by slowing intestinal motility and by affecting water and electrolyte movement through the bowel. Loperamide inhibits peristaltic activity by a direct effect on the circular and longitudinal muscles of the intestinal wall. It is a non-selective calcium channel blocker and binds to opioid mu-receptors. Evidence also suggests that at higher concentrations it binds to calmodulin. and In man, Loperamide prolongs the transit time of the intestinal contents.

    From rxlist . com :

Treatment of diarrhea with IMODIUM (loperamide hcl) is only symptomatic. Whenever an underlying etiology can be determined, specific treatment should be given when appropriate (or when indicated).

I am not talking down the drug, believe me I have used it on many necessary occasions. I only advise that people know what they are putting into their bodies, what the drugs do and make informed decisions. :) I will not get into the auto immune response to the virus, because I do not have nearly enough knowledge to talk to it, but what you say does make sense. At the end of the day people are going to do whatever they want anyways, frequently against medical advise. :D

  3. Im also sailing on Sunday on the NCL Breakaway. Just in case, I got some good anti nausea drugs from my doctor and bringing Immodium. If I get sick I would report it so that the staff could take precautions cleaning our cabin etc. but Ill be armed with my own drugs!

I agree that for those who didn't get sick, there probably always wondering if and when there going to get it, there probably afraid to touch much and it will have effected their cruise in some ways but there are going to be people who make up their mines that there on a cruise and darn it there going to make the best of it. Some people see the glass as half full and of course we all act differently and view things differently. So, my guess will be varied reviews of the cruise. Some people are naturally optimistic and some pessimistic and some in between. In the end I would put money on the fact that alll of the passengers comment on the amazing job the crew did!!

I HIGHLY suggest you only use the Immodium in a situation where you won't have ready & frequent access to a toilet (ie. a plane.) That med does NOTHING to resolve whatever is causing the frequent visits. All it does is inhibit the instestines from rapidly evacuating whatever is causing the irritation to your system. Once the drug wears off, you are still left with a gut full of the bug and your body will pick up right where it left off. You would essentially be prolonging your suffering instead of letting your body do what it needs to do. If you can keep it down, the anti-nausea meds are not a bad idea, but the Immodium or like meds really should be avoided in 99% of situations.

  4. I have seafood allergies and my son has peanut allergies.

The only place they can ensure no cross contamination is in the MDR. This is because passengers with special needs (allergies, diabtic, etc..) will have their foos prepared in a kitchen area away fromt he other passenger meals. Obviously in the buffet is it a little more sporty to get the food that is safe but it is do-able for us since it is just peanuts and not all nuts but for those with more restrictions you may have a rough time without prior coordination. Speaking of... you can email CCL prior to cruise (specialneeds@carnival.com) informing them of your restrictions and you MUST talk to your dining room maitre d' on board during embarkation day to ensure that your individual needs are met.

  5. Had the same question for our Breeze cruise. At the end of the day we chose Lido. Weighed how much time we are by the Lido activities vs how much we are on our balcony and Lido won out for the convenience.

I dont know first hand, but have read others with Cove experience state that the rooms between the forward and miship elevators are optimal. Any further aft and you run into possible noise from the galley.

Only you can decide for sure but whatever you choose I am sure you will love it.. after all you will be on a cruise!! :D

  6. Our first every cruise was on the Summit (sister ship & review is in my signature) in one of the new Deck 11 rooms. Loved it! Blu was amazing and I am sure you will love the extra touches that come with Blu and Aqua in general. We didn't learn about the steam/sauna rooms until mid way through the cruise but check them out at least once as well.

    Again, Enjoy!

  7. Mike,

I've followed along since day 1 and can not tell you how much I appreciate the effort you put into this review. We are doing our first Carnival on the Breeze and you have me feeling like I've already spent days aboard. Very well done! We did th southern in March on X and it was a fantastic time, I hope you guys enjoy it as much as we did.

Best of luck with your potential Ottawa posting. The ride is a fantastic PR arm of the RCMP! We are likely posted out west (Canadian Armed Forces) this summer but hope to one day catch you guys on a cruise! Happy sailing!

  8. I know I'm coming to this party late but here is my peeve..

I grew up thinking that mustard grew in the fields, then I get on the boat and they tell me we can't leave until we drill for it?? And really.. who discovered this underwater supply of mustard?? And who has the rights? I've priced it out in the stores, someone is making a couple of $$ from this venture for sure! Maybe the Captain is taking his cut off the top perhaps?? And how come this mustard is only found in ports? I'm so confused!
