Dungeness is everywhere - for simple prep and good value try The Fish Shack on Granville St. If you want King Crab, then either bring SERIOUS appetites or several more people - and hit up any of the large Chinese restaurants with tanks like Sun Sui Wah, Dynasty, Kirin, Sea Harbour. Kirin downtown is walkable, for the others you need transit or taxi (Dynasty/SSW are in Vancouver but 2 miles+, SH is in Richmond). NB: this far out of season prices are higher, and one crab usually feeds about 6-8 people, so you could end up with a very steep bill just for 2-4 of you!

We will be visiting Vancouver next week and wondering if anyone can recommend where we can eat some good crab. We will be staying at the Hyatt downtown. Many thanks to everyone who contributes such valuable information on this thread. It's been very helpful in planning our stay.

So sorry to here this news. We had heard such wonderful things about Ken and had already planned on booking with him for our 2016 visit in Ketchikan. Very sad and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

If you do end up spending more time along the Seward Hwy/Turnagain Arm area the Turnagain Arm Trail at McHugh Creek and the Winner Creek Trail in Girdwood are nice hikes and much more family friendly than Flattop. Pulling yourself over the gorge in the hand tram at Winner Creek is a treat.

Could you tell me how strenuous is the hand tram and if you decide not to cross that way, how long of a hike is it back? Thanks for your help!

You might want to check with Miller's Landing or contact the visitor center http://www.skagway.com about fishing from shore

 

 

 

A car would be of benefit, allowing you to get to fishing areas perhaps, and especially if you choose to use Miller's Landing which is south of town. It would use your short time efficiently especially with you going to Exit Glacier and the Sealife Center. Reserve the car now, they are easy to just cancel if you change your mind.

I guess the question to ask yourself, is what you are doing, is it enough? With your backtracking, in some cases that could be eating up valuable time. Were you interested in Activities in Seward? Absolute gem in my opinion. IF the 2 days is your total time, for some, putting one of those nights in Seward is a significant benefit.

 

It can also be the train is a priority? It is the most scenic segment of the Alaska RR. But again- you are extremely short on time and the first section is the exact same as your prior day by road. If you have some interests in Seward activities then driving there is of benefit in time.

Thank you so much for the advice, Budget Queen. We've decided to stay one night in Anchorage and catch the early morning train to Seward (train is a priority) and stay 2 nights prior to our cruise. Seems like there is a lot to do to keep us plenty busy there. My partner is interested in shore fishing (not boat fishing) and wondering if you could recommend where I could get info on pole rentals, locations to fish, licenses ect. Also, will it be necessary to rent a car in Seward if we want to visit Exit Glacier, Sealife Center and downtown? Was thinking of staying at the Holiday Inn Express. Would it be redundant to do both car/train? We were planning on 2 nights in Anchorage and renting a car to drive to wildlife center, Girdwood, stopping in between for sites for the day. Then planning on taking the train to Seward to board our ship the next day.

I read that either breakfast or dinner was included in gold star service from Anchorage/Seward depending on your route.

In the past, including last year, the seats are randomly assigned. And actually from Anchorage, the first section is most scenic on the right side, this switches to the left side after Portage. I move around the train and use the dome seats or open vestibules for always getting my "preferred" side.

Wow, this B&B is exactly the type of place we wanted to find for a 2 night stay in Anchorage before heading to Seward for our cruise. Not to sure where this is located. Do you happen to know how far from airport/train station it is and if a cab would be able to pick us up for the early train to Seward? Thanks again for sharing this info!

I had 1138 for a Bermuda cruise in September. Loved it. There was sun and shade at the same time. The Sunset bar people could only see us if we were at the very end of the balcony. We loved being able to get food and drinks only one floor down and enjoy them on the balcony. We also enjoyed listening to the live music from our balcony. Would definitely take the room again, but it books very early.

I believe it is just travel agents you can't mention here.

You have to sign up (it's free) then you have to log on to your account page and click hotel deals. I reserved the Hyatt for our upcoming stay for $145/night. Had a reservation that I cancelled for $250/night. Amazing! Great tip on this site. Thought it was only for cruises!

My 7 and 9 year old nephews absolutely loved being in the boardwalk balcony cabin. They were always entertained by watching people zip line, rock climb and watching the the shows from our balcony. We were not bothered by the noise at all. I agree with clarea that the Central Park balconies are quieter and warmer being further from the opening of the aft of the ship. Either way, enjoy your cruise!

We actually have an upcoming tour with Bernard who came highly recommended to us by several cruise friends and on these boards. I communicated with him earlier and he has had the terrible misfortune of having his email hacked so it does appear that he is the victim in this situation.

7040 did not come up as obstructed view when I booked. I see other E3 forward cabins available on our same Jewel sailing with no obstructed view?? hmmm??
