  1. Hi there, I am the OP of the photo shown in the link above. This was our AC balcony cabin on POA (Hawaii), but the layout is almost identical to the 2 AC cabins we've enjoyed on the Jewel. (Jewel/Pearl also Dawn/Star should be about the same on decks 9 and 10 by AFT stairs/elevators).

Our upcoming 12 day Repo cruise, we'll be in a similar AC balcony (BC) cabin on deck 9. Here is a pretty good exterior picture to help illustrate, how 2 AC balcony cabins on the ships mentioned have been made out of 3 regular ones.

There is a small metal WC ramp that bridges the threshold from cabin to balcony. The balcony is not very deep...room for a couple regular metal chairs, but it is 1.5 X the width of the other BC. Hope that helps.

So far these have had regular glass sliders...other categories my vary.

  2. Sorry, you're right! I was thinking about the repo TO NOLA instead of from - which is in the fall. Yeah, they should know most of the officers for an April cruise.

Are you talking about who you email about setting up a M&G on the ship? No, they aren't call center staff like the ones booking cruises. I don't know how many are in this department, but they handle the same duties for a couple of ships, if not more. They are located in Miami, but you will have a Group Coordinator on board the ship.

Yeah, Dawn and one of the mega ships, too. Anne Barbazza is the name furnished for the actual on-board ship stuff. We'll be having lots of interactions, since they usually wear the Accessibility Hat as well ;)

  3. We are on the NOLA to Boston Repo 4/19 and getting mixed messages on identity of HD.

Reading this thread, it sounds like Alain. Yokasta, Group Event Coordinator at Corporate relays that it will be Sonja and the on-board Group Service Coordinator Anne Barbazza. Does anyone have the very latest, greatest list of Officers/Department Heads?

    Thanks in advance :p

  4. I agree with what others have said. The problem here is incorrect information you received from your ta and not NCL's fault. You can verify this yourself by going to the NCL website and doing a mock booking for your cruise. When you do this, you will see that the UBP is not included as one of the freestyle choice promotions. I understand your frustration. It stinks to be told something is included and then be told it's not only days later. However, this is a problem that your ta needs to address for you.

Even without the UBP this is a pretty sweet deal. I hope you are able to put this issue to rest and enjoy your cruise.

We do our own bookings and we are nowhere near as expert as a TA is supposed to be, trained and certified to be, et al. But when we booked our last New Orleans to Boston Caribbean Adventure cruise it didn't say it was a repositioning cruise, (one season to another, one locale to another far distant one). But when we attempted to apply the promos offered, the choices were airfare, OBC or UDP. UBP as never even on the table.

In Suites, the whole enchilada looks to include UBP, but if this choice does not load on a 'mock booking' then you can be fairly certain there is a reason for that. And when you see and asterisk* that leads to fine print, it is spelled out.

A TA who does not know these basics, and promises the whole package and then turns around and tells you NCL 'reclassified' the cruise is not only passing the buck  but remiss for not accepting responsibility for their own error of assumption. IMHO.

  5. While I feel sorry for the family of the college student that went overboard, (Carnival, of course ), I think you can tell your fiancé that given the fact it was Spring Break and the liquor was likely to be more freely than usual-even on a 3 or 4 day Bahamas run-extraordinary things that happen very very rarely, are not at all likely to happen to him. Or anyone he knows.

I think a ocean view cabin is going to trump a balcony in your particular case. Let him know the porthole or window is sealed rather than the type that opens. Avoid the promenade or any areas directly overlooking the water or in close proximity to the railings. That should do the trick, unless there is something else going on

  6. The AC cabins are set up per ADA guidelines. Doors have 34 to 36" width with no threshholds. There is a small metal ramp that goes out to the balcony. Some of the balcony rooms are 50% larger than standard BC class, they took 3 regular BC cabins and turned them into 2 AC variety.

The sideways obstructed oceanview cabins on deck 8 are about 20% larger than non-AC in same category. The bathrooms for all are nice and roomy, like the cabin you will have a full turning circle possible with a wheelchair.

The lights and climate controls are set at WC height, the closet has a feature when you can bring down the hanging rod from the seated position to better access and hang your clothing. The desk area, like that bathroom sink, is hollow underneath so you may pull right up to it in a WC.

Some complain that the no threshold shower is a wet mess. It has a perimeter floor drain marking off 2 sides, grab bars, heavy duty pull down slatted shower chair, hand held shower head and privacy curtain if desired. You do not have as much counter space area for toiletries, one trade-off, but a hanging cosmetic bag is always an option.

The room steward will provide extra bath towels to soak up any extra water, as needed. They also will provide extension cords and distilled water for those pax needing them for CPAP type devices. When not in use we stored my folding WC (the sort rented from Special Needs At Sea) in the bathroom, there was plenty of room.

If any port stops require tendering vs pier docking, a folding WC can go with you while a scooter almost never can, due to weight restrictions.

  7. Actually, if you do not order an entrée, there is not supposed to be a charge ;)

    Perhaps that has changed.

As an RN what I do know is that there are all manner of vegetarians. Vegan, the most strict, do not consume egg or dairy products. Ovo-lacto, as it sounds do consume both. My sister would occasionally consume fish.

I find that many people are not 'allergic' to dairy products but are rather lactose-intolerant, lacking the latase (enzyme) in order to break down the mild sugar, or lactose. Many people become tolerant as they grow up. It helps to take lactase tablets, drink Lactaid milk, acidopholus milk and so on. Often the active culture yogurts are tolerated due to the pro-biotics which help break down the milk sugars.

In true dairy allergy there may be other culprits. I bring the chewable tablets on cruises and can have a dish of ice cream or cream soup/sauce if I like. If I forget, then I will be miserable. Which category does your daughter fall into?

I think the salad bar at Moderno is wonderful. Marinated garbano/kidney beans and other legumes, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, mushrooms, carrots, hearts of palm and several others.

Garlic mashed potatoes, (enquire as to dairy), fried bananas, rice and beans the sides. Most don't know that the cheese rolls are gluten free as they use tapioca flour instead of wheat. Still, with true dairy allergy rather than lactose intolerance this might be another issue.

Desserts at Moderno have egg, milk or gelatin in all three, but the grilled pineapple, the juices caramelized with a hint of brown sugar and cinnamon, is outrageous.

Cagney's has no vegetarian mains and an Arugula Salad that might suit.

Sides such as Steamed Broccoli, Green Beans, Roasted Mushrooms, Onion Rings, Cagney's Fries, Grilled Beetroot and Red Shallots as well as Orzo Pilaf are available.

What does she normally consume for protein? A note sent to NCL at least a month out will provide lots of additional information, including what they can modify so your daughter has a positive, even tasty experience. :)

  8. Is there somewhere I can find a list of prices for the Specialty Dining on Dawn. I'm trying to decide if I should just get the UDP. Thanks!

It's available from the NCL site, but here are the current prices:

    Cagney's $30

    Teppanyaki $25

    Le Bistro $20

    Moderno $20

    La Cucina $15

    Bamboo $15

Both Cagney's and Le Bistro have some upcharge items on their menus which cost an additional $10. With the UDP you will not incur anything extra for these goodies. :p

  9. The same company also rents oxygen concentraters if you friend will need one on ship. On our last cruise one of my favorite shipmates used both a scooter and PAC, and did fine. We were able to find a limited mobility tour, and those who wanted to walk about a bit could do so.

She had a blast, and so did I using my quad cane for short distances and wheelchair we rented through them for the rest. Your friend will need an Rx if he needs O2. The Doctor's Office can fax it over to the Special Needs at Sea folks and they do all the rest. :)

About the only time the scooter would be an issue would be if the ship needs to tender, anchoring a bit out from port, rather than tying onto a cruise dock. Where are you planning to go?

  10. I do miss chilled soups, asparagus in Cagney's, ahi burger in Cagney's. We had the brownie sundae in Blue Lagoon on the Jewel PC Repo just before she went into dry dock. If it's gone, we will miss it, but I bet you could find a brownie in the buffet and put a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top. Concept.

What I don't miss is the $1,300 we originally paid pp for balcony cabin on an upcoming 12 day cruise. $900 is a much nicer price, and especially combined with UDP...how can they do that?:cool:;)

  11. It was mentioned being served in Le Bistro but I've never seen it.

They did have an extra charge entree, Lobster, scallops and shrimp in a herbed cream sauce in puff pastry that looked pretty decent, and even more likely with the UDP promo :p

  12. You can only choose one... which is it?

If I wanted mostly starches I would pick La Cucina. This is a sleeper bargain: $15 cover and a really delicious 14 oz Rib eye steak, cooked to your order.

If I wanted traditional meat and potatoes type food, with an emphasis on beef I would pick Cagney's. It was 20% off the first night, helping temper the large $30 cover.

If I wanted rich, fancy sauces, pampering service, and traditional French offering, I would pick Le Bistro. Most romantic for a duo IMHO. The filet is reliably good for those who don't want a cream gorged mushroom soup, buttery escarcots, coq au vin, lamb chops or duck. The desserts are all special, all jam packed with calories, too.

If I wanted mostly meat, meat and more meat, with some interesting, tapas type salad buffet items, and didn't care about dessert, I would select Moderno. One trick? Forget the sides, they are imminently forgettable, and go with your favorite cuts of meat, cooked to your order. $20. I stuck with filet, lamb chop, their specialty cap of sirloin and marinated chicken leg...best of the best.

If I was tired of rich, fatty, buttery, fried or cream ladden meals, then Chin Chin could get the nod, at $15. I am a big fan of the curried lamb chops, Soothing Lettuce Wraps, coconut or pineapple sorbet, light as a feather calamari and a few other items.

  13. No charge for the ropes course...and there is a weight limit (300# I believe but somone would need to validate that). I am not sure if there is an extra charge for the rock wall.

Very sorry to barg in our your thread, but I am tabulating our M&G list for 4/19/15 NCL Dawn. Your name was on the list, but no other posts, so I wanted to double check if you are still cruising with us? :)

  14. If you are planning on taking an NCL Cruise, be sure and sign up for your Roll Call where you can introduce yourselves and chat with like-minded Cruisers before embarkation.

Many times members of your RC will agree to a Meet & Greet, where you can put faces to names and have a chance to hear from some of the ship's senior management/officers.

By socializing beforehand, and at our M&G you will have ample oppurtunity to arrange some group meals. One we are doing is an Embarkation Luncheon, where a bunch of us will gather in the ship's MDR (Main Dining Room), open on our first day.

Others who enjoy the camaraderie and boheme of dining with new friends, will likely want more of these get togethers. This can either be in one of the complimentary venues or a specialty restaurant. I have enclosed one of our CC Roll Call group dinners to give you an idea.

Free style means no set meal times or table assignments. Mostly a very good thing, but you can always make your requests known...this is one way we've found very useful.
