  1. I am NOT a member of the "Royal Caribbean Can Do No Wrong Brigade" and they have done things that made me mad before. That being said I do have to say, and I don't mean this in a derogatory manner, but you seem to be a lot more sensitive to movie choices than what I would guess is the majority of people. That's totally fine. We all have preferences for everything.

Do you think that, at least until the kids are older, Disney Cruise Line may be a better fit for your family?

  2. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make it seem like I was referring specifically to you.

I was just trying to say in a general sense that this is not the place to get a medical opinion and that even if the person furnishing that opinion is a physician they can't and haven't conducted the exams and personal history reviews needed to give proper advice.

  3. You are absolutely correct to recommend people seeing their primary care physician for accurate information related specifically for them.

You may not have a medical background (although with your condition you sincerely know much more than many physicians) but there many on CC that do and are able to have a casual discussion on a given topic.

The problem is: These casual conversations where people with medical backgrounds are giving advice don't include a physical exam, medical history review, medication review, etc... So even if one of these commenters were an Infectious Disease specialist they could not give a proper reccomendation. Even further, if they were to have a patient come in to their clinic and dispensed advice without that data and those evaluations they'd be subject to disciplinary action by their state Medical Board.

  4. OK, never mind. The use of the word "drugs" when speaking about a joint reflects a mindset that shows we will have to agree to disagree.

In that same situation where they had the pot but instead walked up and slapped an officer; I'd be going to jail in the Bahamas.

When you're on a ship your basically on a little floating piece of whatever country that ship is flagged in; unless it's in the territorial waters or maybe even the exclusive economic waters of another country.

If you commit a crime at sea, you've committed a crime in the flag state of the vessel. US law also extends to certain crimes committed by any US Citizen ANYWHERE in the world. For instance, some countries allow children under 18 to engage in consensual sexual activity with someone over the age of 18. If you go to that country and do that, you are subject to arrest by the US Government. If you commit piracy you're also subject to US arrest, same with various other crimes.

  5. I have a real issue on "Emotional Support Animals" to me it's a crock of B/S. If it's a "service" and I MEAN service animal, I'm fine with it. I have no problem shaming people who try to fake it. You can buy "service" animal labels, sweaters, whatever you want. I've even seen a law firm online telling you how to fake the documentation. I confronted a couple guys with a huge unruly dog in Sam's Club. The mgt. there (and in MANY places)are too chicken @#$%$ to challenge these fakers. Well, I'm NOT. Threatening to call the cops on these guys in Sam's Club got them heading out the door real fast. I told a woman with her "snuggly" little rat of a dog about the $2000 fine & 6 months in jail(not true, wish it was!!) for faking service dogs & that I was about to call the cops. She took off out of that grocery store real quick. Thanks to our "STUPID" Government & their damned "P/C" policy, it's made it a haven for the fraudsters out there. One way a company can make someone leave the store/place of business is to ask "What service does your animal provide?"(not the same as asking the disability)If the person refuses to disclose the service the animal provides, you may then demand they leave the place of business. I'm beginning to see posted signs refusing admittance for "Emotional Support Animals". It's about damn time!

Service Animals are not about a "PC" government enforced law. The Air Carrier Access Act was signed into law by Reagan I do believe. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law by George Bush (#1) and specifically states that the animals are allowed anywhere the person is allowed and that the business is only allowed to ask if the animal is a service animal and what specific task has the dog been trained to perform.

These laws were written this way because so many businesses think they're above the law and shouldn't be regulated. About a year and a half ago a business in Houston kicked a woman out who had a service animal and six they didn't care what the law was (as they kicked her out) when the story went viral online and the media became involved it all changed. I've read some of the ADA Enforcement Actions and some are downright shocking in what these people have done.

That being said, I agree that people that abuse the system and cheat and lie so they can take their pet somewhere should be heavily punished because they make it more difficult for people with actual disabilities. These people already face difficulties in every aspect of their lives, why add more? To me that's just criminal.

  6. Is this someone already working for them (or perhaps a friend/acquaintance) or a professional hired just for this?

If the latter, how did they find her/him? Through a service?

We noticed mention of this type of thing a couple of years ago here, and it got us thinking.

Then on an international flight, we saw a couple where one of the pair was severely disabled, and they obviously had someone with them who was helping.

(The couple sat in Business class, and their helper sat in coach. I assume the helper would be allowed up front if there was a need, such as a trip to the lav.)

Anyway, it got us thinking... at some point, one of us will probably need a bit more help than the other can give, or perhaps it would only be that the other would like a bit of a break on a vacation...

So we realized that finding someone to go with us would probably be the way to go.

Having younger adults with young children to join us can provide some help (and does, even now ;) ), but that wouldn't work when/if more serious help is needed.

But how to find such a person, if one doesn't already know of someone?

    Thanks.

There are websites where you can find care givers. Such as care . Com

They even have background checks. Also, if you use a travel agent (actual agent, not Web based or through the cruise line) they can arrange for a service that has care givers that only provide travel care. They're specially trained with providing travel related care (ie: what to do in an emergency on a ship, etc...).

  7. When I took care of my 95-97 year old grandfather for 2 years I would often drop him off at the door and go park in a handicapped spot. Just because he was dropped off doesn't mean he won't be walking back to the car when we left. Also, he didn't use a scooter or chair so the longer it took me to get the car, the longer he had to stand waiting.

Some people just have a problem minding their own business. I had someone report me to a cop at Walmart for "abusing" the handicapped parking. The cop asked if it was my plate and I said no, it belongs to my grandfather who was standing at the door waiting. He apologized and walked to a parked car and talked to the woman who I assume reported me for taking care of a 96 year old man.

That being said, some people do abuse the placards and they should be fined but one should never assume that a young person is "abusing" the system just because they're young. I had my own placard for a while at 29 after spinal surgery.

  8. Not wheelchair bound but sometimes I have difficulties standing in long, slow lines and my cousin (who I travel with) has some lung issues). We decided that Global Entry was our solution. We get all of the PreCheck benefits and depending on where we enter the country we either get to clear customs via a computer kiosk or we get front of line privileges.

Global Entry was only $15 more than PreCheck.

  9. Hi Jason, we have a group booking through our friends at the LQ Inn West. I considered staying just outside Galveston possibly at the Nasa Center location since we will be there on the 1st of July 2017 to take the tour, then drive in from there but since we will be joining friends of ours and their family, we are staying in Galveston. I am making up my mind on where we will park the day of the cruise

If we weren't parking at my cousin's house for the cruise we'd be parking at Lighthouse Parking. http://www.lighthouseparking.com

There is a $10 off coupon too. I think it's posted somewhere in this thread.

  10. Thank you, I did a search yesterday right after I posted.:) I am still trying to decide which is the best way for us. I was considering staying at the La Quinta Inn East Seawall with our friends, but we also want to meet a couple from our August 2017 sailing who live outside Houston and meet for dinner. This caused me to wonder if it would be better we drive down half way from IAH, meet them for dinner and spend the night at a nearby Hotel then come down in the morning.

I lived in the area for a long time and would say unless you specifically want to stay in Galveston you can probably stay in a nicer hotel cheaper in Clear Lake/Webster area. It's about midway from Hobby to Galveston too. Webster is exits 27, 26. 25 on I-45 and the cruise terminal is Exit 1, so about 35 minutes (give or take with traffic). Hobby airport exit is somewhere in the mid 40's but there will be a bit of traffic, especially between the beltway and loop on I-45.

  11. I've travelled internationally all my life, for both pleasure and business, and lived in Europe for extended periods of time pre EU. It was only when I joined Cruise Critic that I became aware of people who seem to resist carrying their passport while travelling in a foreign country. Personally, I don't understand the great reluctance to carry one's passport; there are few if any other official government-issued documents that are as enabling when abroad.

Some people can't fathom the idea that the Passport is the document they NEED while overseas. They think it's for getting off the ship but don't realize that while in a Foreign country that's their only official ID, their access to consulate/embassy facilities and services as well as the document that allows someone to be notified in an emergency.

    Pure ignorance, in some cases.
