  1. That price was for a claim.....average claim paid. What difference does it make how profitable it is. Obviously if there was no profit they would not offer it (like all insurance by the way). The important factor is at what cost (the premium - which in all probability is pretty low) does it offer protection against extreme situations (and all smaller ones as well I might add).

Where do you find that the average claim paid is 35k? I think you are interchanging trip cancellation insurance with medical coverage. These are two different products that are many times bundled together. The reason the premium is low is that the probability of having a claim is low.

Trip cancellation: in the majority of cases is not needed.

The time frame for filling a claim is (not counting your airfare) after the final payment date or for nonrefundable deposits. (So 60-90 days before the cruise). So not only do you need to cancel for an approved reason it has to cause you to have monetary loss and has to happen in a small window.

While there are some exceptions I would guess most people pay for their cruise with a credit card. If you travel frequently pick a card that provides "trip cancellation and interruption insurance"

I also hear people say they can't afford to lose the money if they have to cancel, but the reality is they are still spending the same amount on the cruise if they go or if they don't go. (In fact they would spend less since they wouldn't have drinks, souvenirs etc). They just would not receive anything for the outlay of cash.

If you want to make a case for medical coverage when abroad I would agree with you that is a valuable item to have and can be bought for a reasonable amount of money.

Trip cancellation 8-10% of trip cost, capped payment and multiple coverage limitations No

Medical coverage approx $35-$50 for 50k coverage Yes

  2. Get Medivac and see what the bill comes out to be... Hey if you can afford the risk and be your own insurer ---> GREAT! But most of us LITTLE PEOPLE do not want to risk our financial well being due to the unknown...

I hate insurance companies like everyone else ---> until you need them!

trip cancellation and medical insurance are two different products. You can buy medical coverage without trip cancellation insurance.

  3. You have 6 months from

The time of the charge to redeem your points towards it. I think the minimum amount is 1000 points. You would do well redeem for the $300 as soon as you can because the reward structure is likely changing . My wife has the Princess card issued by Barclay bank (same as carnival) and they just provided notice that redemption are changing (better for those redeeming more and worse for those redeeming less).

  4. I am often amazed at how many people think they can swim, but are wrong. We like to snorkel when we cruise and have started noticing that every excursion at least one person starts floundering. Every time this person says the same thing, " I don't know whats wrong, I am a good swimmer". This obviously is not the case, so what makes people flounder who think they are good swimmers? Have they just been to a few pools and never really in the ocean over their head? I know my own children think they can swim because they can make it from one side of the pool to the other. Having grown up on the Gulf of Mexico, I know that one is no comparison to the other.

They vary well could be good swimmers in a pool but most cruise excursions happen in large bodies of salt water with waves, current etc. and if you are in deeper water people will experience anxiety if they are unable to see the bottom.

Heck I was a good swimmer in both a pool and open water but try swimming for the first time in a triathlon open water start. Bodies, water splashing everywhere, getting kicked and hit. The kayaks even have to fish some of the athletes out of the water as they get into trouble.

Sometimes it is just the circumstances and sometimes people overestimate their abilities.

  5. I called PayPal again and they said this is not a PayPal owned store. It's just a seller that uses PayPal in their name according to this Rep. They just handle their transactions for them. I am now being told to contact the seller to see if they would accept another form of payment because despite flags being removed, they can get the sell to go thru. The Rep also said that it could also be that the seller is not in good standing because they have received several complaints. Oh well, I give up. I'll just wait for AARP to offer them again.

Unless they have sold the store to a 3rd party in the last 2 years the rep is wrong

And from the PayPal site itself

  6. I've tried so many times and have even worked with PayPal. PayPal said they released all flags but the purchase still won't go through. They are now saying that they have received too many claims against this seller and my purchase won't be approved due to that reason. I told them others have successfully been able to make purchases using PayPal but they told me that there was nothing they could do! I'm so frustrated since I've been trying since Saturday!!!!

If you are buying the discounted ones everyone else is talking about the rep flat out lied to you or doesn't have a clue. The seller is "PayPal digital gifts"- a PayPal owned store

  7. Just curious here. I have a cruised booked and I think I found a cruise I would rather go on. I am two weeks from sailing so I know I would only get my excursions and cheers money back, which I am okay with. I would use this money to book another cruise?

So, my question is this, has anyone here ever taken a loss on a cruise to book a different cruise for one reason or another? Or am I just crazy?

If you would enjoy the other cruise more and get more bang for your buck than by all means go for it.

For instance to give up $ 500 on a cruise to the Bahamas versus a once in a lifetime cruise to the Antarctic.

But we don't know the details so it is hard to say

  8. I bought one yesterday and had 6 others from PPDG. I checked my balance on all 7 5 minutes ago and they were all okay.

Mine are fine as well but if they are compromised and you are outside the dispute

Window you don't have much protection or rights. Multiple places have people posting about issues. Carnival gcs haven't been mentioned but it is always better to safe than sorry. Google Hyatt hotel gift card fraud to see how a trickle of compromised cards ballooned into a huge issue.

And my question was about ways to attach gcs to my cruise account pre- cruise

  9. No , If I buy 1 share or 25,000 shares , It is a flat $7 fee ... When I sell the shares it is the same just $7 and I am not on margin ... cash account so In and out total is $ 14 .no commission's

But you responded to my post talking about opening both sides of a trade. The post wasn't about just buying shares of stock but rather buying and at the same time shorting shares of the stock. So the cost of the obc was the fees for both sides of the trade opened/closed and you indeed would have a margin account to do that.

People are free to buy shares of Ccl but to call it a good investment is a false statement. Maybe if you bought at the IPO price but it has lagged the markets for a decade and you would come out ahead by simply investing in a market fund. Even factoring the obc which can only be used on items priced above market price after spending hundreds or thousands or dollars on a cruise. If you can show a way to get the obc without paying for a cruise than that would change the math.

  10. If you are paying 50-75 dollars to buy /sell that is high , I pay $7 to buy $7 to sell with Scottrade ,unlimited number of shares

Well at a minimum you would pay $28 since you are buying x 2, selling x 2. You also are short selling so you are essentially taking a loan and must pay for that (albeit a short time if you move in and out quickly). Also if the broker does not have a large supply of stock to short they will charge you a hard to find fee. So there are more costs involved.

  11. I guess the other option is to play both sides of the equation. If you have 2 brokerage accounts you could buy 100 shares while simultaneously shorting 100 shares. You would be out the commission both directions so it would only make sense

    on a 14 day cruise.

Once you get the confirmation of the buy you could close both positions. So depending on commission and margin rates you would probably pay $50-$75 in fees to buy $250 in obc.

  12. Stock credit depends on the length of cruise. Varies from

    $50 to $250. http://phx.corporate-ir.net/External.File?item=UGFyZW50SUQ9Mjc0MjIzfENoaWxkSUQ9LTF8VHlwZT0z&t=1

Definitely not worth buying for only the obc. Carnival's stock has under performed the market for a period of time. Even if you are even before taking into account obc you have to take the opportunity cost into account. Carnival stock has underperformed the stock market. Using today's closing price of 46.xx from 10 years ago 41.xx gives you a return of 10%. By contrast the Nasdaq had returned over 205% in the same time frame. So the $41xx you invested in carnival would be worth $46xx. Has you invested that same $4100 in a QQQ or an index fund you would have over $8200 (you also would have earned dividends for both carnival and the index fund/QQQ. This year that would be about $140 for Carnival and $90 for QQQ) It would take a lot of cruises to make that back. ( and obc only can be used on products/services that are inflated in price on Board).

  13. And I thought it was bad being pee'd on by a monkey. (Not just a little bit either)

we did the victor boddan tour and we asked to go snorkeling so one of the stops was a beach where we could go snorkeling. That being said of you are into snorkeling Belize was the best of the three. The national park snorkeling was amazing as well as the sea turtle sanctuary. We took a plane from port but I think some groups have a fast boat as well. Belize>roatan>Cozumel

  14. 1) Yes you can pay for buckets, tunes etc. Although I think once you reach 15 drinks (under the cheers portion- not the buckets etc as they don't count against your limit). you can no longer buy alcohol until 6 am the next morning.

    2) If you were buying a single beer for yourself it would count against your cheers 15 but you could buy a drink for someone else and pay for that.

  15. We did cheers on our last cruise but that was the old plan with drinks $10 and under. But they were offering match play for classic cocktails so at the end of the day we ordered drinks just to get the match play. Used that to go pass/don't pass on craps and we made $5 each roll of the dice (would have lost $5 if a 12 came up but it never did) so it helped pay for a good chunk of the package.

When I saw they removed match play I wasn't going to get it this trip but with the new limits I think we will get it.

Does anyone have a liquor/wine list for the steakhouse on the Splendor? I found a dessert menu with some after dinner drinks but that was it.

Does the 25% off bottles of wine/champagne still work and is there a limit? Saw that they have bottles of Dom Perignon for $242. It is the 2003 so it is not the greatest vintage from looking at reviews but with the 25% discount it would be $182 (not sure if there would be a 15% grat charge) But without the grat charge it would cheaper than buying state side. (Cheapest online is $150 before shipping, tax, most are closer to 185-190) Might be worthwhile to some.

  16. Hello! I'm Candace and I'm fairly new to CC :D Anyhow, I do have a request for ideas regarding keeping intouch on the boat. So my family is going on the Magic at the end of this month, and we want to know if theres a way to communicate with eachother without having to buy the internet, cellphone service, or walkie talkies. In the past I've just ran across the ship and told my parents where I was going to be in person, but it's a hassle and I'm not always able to get to them,(If they're in the adults only area, the casino, etc.), so some forum of wireless communication would be nice! I remember hearing something about using Carnival's forums a while back, but I just wanted to know if any of you had ideas! Thanks!

    {P.S, its just my two parents and me, so I can't use the buddy system with siblings. (curse being an only child :()}

If you have a internet enabled device you can use the carnivals forums to communicate for free on ship or with people off ship. Not sure however how quick it updates to the board if you are out to sea.

Just go to carnival.com. Along the bottom click support forums which takes you to the funville forums. Register for the forums, look for the subforum "currently onboard" under user groups and make a new post. Everyone can than post for free on that message thread.

We posted once a day with an update for our family and they could leave us messages. No cost for this.

If you go this route I would get user names set up before you sail and just bookmark that page on your device so it loads quicker

  17. One person I would never tip and just don't understand why anyone would I'd the Maitre-D

I tipped the Maitre-D on a Disney cruise last year because she (and her assistant) went out of their way to accomodate my family and some special dietary needs we had as well setting up an extra special BDay celebration.

I don't remember there being a true Maitre-D on the Glory this year. There was a woman Maitre-D supervising the hostess but she never left the podium to seat guests or address guests beyond hello. Really more of a head hostess than a true Maitre-D. The same thing in the Steakhouse, more of a hostess than a Maitre-D.
