I have done this trip many times. The ship will shuttle you to the port gate. From here it is a flat leisurely walk past shops along the sea front of about 10mins to the train station. The worst part are the cobbled street so stick to the sea side promenade. Be prepared for the stairs at the train station though, no lifts when I was there last time.

I use blue tak or tie a balloon on some string and loop it over the door handle. Makes finding the cabin easier to see it from a distance

On the Pacific Jewel for a short 2 night cruise and have a late flight and just wondering how long I can stay onboard till they kick me off LOL. Just hoping to enjoy the cruise for as long as possible. Any thoughts?

We booked our tours at the tour desk after the ship had sailed. The lines were long and tours are in French or Spanish. Recommend that you sit near the front and tell the tour guide that you are an English speaker. Generally they will try to accommodate you, assuming they speak English (most do). But certainly the bulk of the tour will be in Spanish or French.
Here's a hard-to-find list of some tours in English. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9447968/EXCURSIONS%20TROPICALE%202014%20-%202015%20-%20Horizon_EN.pdf
Hi Stockjock,
your shore excursions list is fantastic. Can you recall roughly any prices ?

I would think anyone who needed a companion for dressing, etc would already have someone that they used at home. In the old days, she would have been called a "Lady's Maid". My mother-in-law traveled a lot when she was elderly and just went with another elderly friend. They helped each other. :)
There was a vast differance between the roles of 'ladies Maid and 'Lady's Companion ". The maid was just that a downstairs helper where as the comapnion was usually a women of education and good breeding ( according to the Victorian guidlines !) that may have been a spinster or widowed early in life.

I have travelled the world extensively often on my own and have found so many people say this will be there last holiday / cruise as they can no longer mange to travel alone wether it be due to age or mobility or loosing a spouse. I thought of the old fashioned " ladies companion " who gave company and assistance in exchange for paid travel expenses. Is there I need out there for this service ?

I have started using the term solo traveller after visiting this site...sounds less desperate than single. I decided life is to be lived and to travel despite not having a special person in my life. Just hope people are friendly and will chat over meals etc and not treated like a freak !

Just arrived today into Melbourne on the Pacific Jewel.
I can highly recommend Tash Genetzakis our driver from City Hire Cars.
Very clean and comfortable car.
Professional and courteous.
Called me when she arrived which was early letting me know where she was.
Whole process from booking to drop off was great.
Good price also.
