  1. Thanks to all who responded. Appreciate the update!!

Since about the first of the year, Le Cirque is not offered any more on any of the HAL ships. The New York restaurant went bankrupt and closed. The other Le Cirques around the country were franchises, and I believe some of them are still open. The pop-up Sel de Mer is offered in the Pinnacle Grill one or two nights in place of Le Cirque on the ships that do not have the stand alone Sel de Mer.
  2. Getting excited about my upcoming Alaska cruise in Sept. It's my first cruise!!

What day in the cruise is the 'Evening at Le Cirque' typically offered?

Does the MDR usually do a big event the last evening of the cruise?

Is the Gala night still usually the first sea day (we'll have scenic cruising on Day 2.)

I'll be aboard the Westerdam, 7 day cruise south from Anchorage to Vancouver.

    Thanks!

  3. Just about ready to book my very first cruise (all of my research until now has been for my parents' cruises  )

I like the itinerary for the Sept 9, 2018 cruise RT from Seattle to Alaska. But I'd like to have the ATK and one of the clubs/lounges BB Kings or Billboards.

Has ms Amsterdam been updated to include any of these venues? I realize she's not the newest or biggest ship in the fleet but it seems just right for me.

    Thanks!!

  4. :D:D

I bet that is known as the foodie table now!

Sounds like a table I would enjoy the experience of being a foodie!

I appreciate not being relegated to the lifeboat of shame with gruel (ordered by lunch) & sparkling water (at bar cost!) :D

Looking forward to my first winter TA

  5. The items mentioned such as a specific cut of steak or chicken done a certain way doesn't seem difficult, in fact I have also asked for less "special sauce" in restaurants.

I'm not sure what beef wellington or chateaubriand require. I guess if the ingredients are on board and there is notice it is possible.

I can also see where a longer voyage would get old. During college the entrees in the dining would get old...not that I'm comparing Cunard to a college cafeteria.

I'm a fan of chocolate souffle and I do like the presentation of anything involving fire. Perhaps I'll give it a shot. ;)

Thanks again for the reasonable replies.

  6. Sounds like an Ocean view with typical winter layers + rain gear is the way to go. I love watching storms come in from the horizon on land so this should be a treat. Not being one to lounge by the pool or wear sleeveless, strapless or shorts this suits me much better.

Thank you very much. And safe journeys to you all!

  7. Hi Greyt Mom,

Here's some photos of two winter transatlantics on QM2 to give you some idea of what to expect (but the weather on every crossing can be different from the next), both left Southampton on Dec 15th, a year apart:

I'll try to answer some of your questions and post again shortly.

    Hope these photos help.

    Best wishes,

Thanks Pepper...the photos are great...thanks for sharing. Looks like fun is very much possible!

  8. I am intrigued about this notion of ordering off-menu. My question is, why?

From some of the threads it almost seems like a sport between the passengers and the chefs.

I'm not looking to get flamed or relegated to eating rations in a lifeboard on my next cruise. :D

I can understand asking for a substitution of a vegetable or request the sauce for an entree be served on the side. There are also food allergies and minor dislikes. But it sounds like people order completely different dishes that aren't an adaptation of an exisitng dish.

The chefs & Cunard have gone to the trouble to create menus with a variety of dishes as well as offer the option of other eateries (potentially with a surcharge.)

Please enlighten me as to why order off-menu?

    Thanks!

  9. I am looking to book my first TA and am interested in a winter voyage for the possible savings and perhaps less of a crowd.

How cold is it during the November and December sailings? The better question is, would a balcony serve any purpose other than a large picture window for the trip?

I know what cold weather is like on land. I've lived in New York City, Boston & Pittsburgh. I'm not adverse to wearing sweaters/layers but will I be able to enjoy the ocean breeze from the deck (with a jacket) on nicer days at sea?

Are there any "gosh I should have thought of that" items that come to mind for winter travel?

    Thannks :)

  10. What do people think of the wearing of your Military Service Ribbons or Minature Medals to the ship's formal nights. I have seen some passengers wearing their medals (Minature) to these functions. Is it appropriate or not. If it is appropriate I may wear mine on my next cruise.

I appreciate knowing who has served in our military. The ribbons/small medals & uniform are a great way to strike up a conversation...or to say a brief "thanks.". :)

My father served 2 years in the Army then transferred to the Army Reserve for 9 years. He is pleased that Princess recognizes veterans all year long with the OBC. This perk isn't the reason my parents continue to enjoy Princess.

My dad lets my mom have fun with the $150. The Army "ruined" their wedding & honeymoon plans. The 2 week Reserve schedule wasn't posted until well into wedding & honeymoom plans.

That was 51 yrs ago...but the Army still "owes" them (mostly my mom) a trip to Paris!!

And what woman doesn't like to see a man in uniform!!

Go big or eat at the HC on formal night!

  11. I wonder if it had something to do with the captain on our cruise saying they needed tug assistance because the channel was so narrow and the depth was less than expected...

Attention: "For those passengers training for the X Games, work for AAA or want a unique shore excursion, please meet at the aft to help push the ship out of the channel. The Navigation Officer will buy the first round of drinks at the Wheelhouse bar. Thank you" :D

  12. Hi,

I happened to see this post as I am looking for any updates on the Royal Princess currently in New England/Canada.

About a week before embarking on their cruise, my parents/all passengers were updated that one of the Canadian ports would end earlier because the ship needed to be out of the port due to changes in the tide.

Today in Bar Harbor there was a delay in letting passengers tender due to choppy waters. The Captain could have cancelled the port all together but waited a bit to make the decision...the tour companies all cooperated.

Saint John will be cancelled all together because of weather so there will be two days spent in Halifax.

The point is, this area is probably getting the reminants of Gonzales or just crappy weather. The Captain will do his best to keep everyone and the ship out of harm's way. The itinerary might change, there might be some rough waters, the bars might run out of rum (OK...that's a reason to abandon ship!)

Just go with whatever is happening at moment. Pack a book, a jacket and some patience. You'll have a great cruise no matter where you end up!

I'd much rather be on a cruise ship moving away from the storm than sitting at home dealing with the possible effects of the storm.

  13. Last November we were fogged out of Houston for several hours. It was approaching 11 am and I was getting a little hungry. Suddenly I remembered the IC!!! I ran down there and grabbed two donuts. Within 10 minutes the line for the IC went around the atrium! Getting there first was good timing!

Wrong quote but I appreciate AKman2495 referencing sherryf...

Since she was offering two "no calorie" donuts you didn't want to be rude by turning down her kind offer!

I made the mistake of mentioning this to my dad...he was afraid there would only be toast and coffee the last morning...now he's excited about the last meal on the Royal before he's even set sail!! :p

Thanks to everyone. I appreciate the info!
