  1. Thank you for confirming what I was feeling. I even had my tape measure out to see the length of my bed and added 3 feet. Cruise Critic friends are the best friends to have. You always have the answer--even to "strange" questions!!

    Mom C

She should get a scooter and you get access to the sanctuary for the entire cruise without telling her!!

    OR

Get your cabin changed to a different deck and "forget" to tell her your new cabin number...hehehe!

Ditch the "friend" and enjoy your cruise.

  2. Just read that Royal Caribbean not having sea pass cards on their new ships but wrist bands instead......Benidorm here we come. Let's hope Princess don't go the same way cant imagine wearing a bright blue band with my evening dress!

A Bedazzle workshop could be an activity early in the cruise! ;)

Or Princess could offer different styles (for a nominal fee.). :D

  3. About a year or so ago' date=' we got a free one of those (that brand, not sure of the exact type) that our health insurance company was sending to people with certain disorders, I guess. Our family asthmatic got one. Still in its package, unopened, as that recall announcement came out about that time.

I have a watch with a plastic band that I stopped wearing. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a watch band that fits without irritating me or slipping around my narrow wrist.[/quote']

Another reason to pack a roll of duct tape!! :D

The tape comes in so many neat colors & designs.

  4. I appreciate your responses and reminders...blue tape is going as a compromise to Duct tape...long battle before their cruise last year!

I tried to pick a photo/image that isn't too personal, doesn't have any personal info and isn't too tacky/gaudy, a fire hazard or something that might get in the way of the cabin steward.

Sophie is my parents' 106 lb Schnoodle. (Giant Schnauzer / Standard Poodle mix) She is most definitely the princess of the house. I thought it seems fitting that "Princess Sophie" tag along on the Royal Princess.

I've attached a couple of photos from my phone of Sophie if anyone needs an image for your next door marker...see, quite the princess :D

My dad isn't much for electronic things so the photo will go in his bag - laminated so it won't bend or wrinkle.

Safe, fun and relaxing travels to all of you. :)

  5. I don't need a lot of high tech stuff to keep me cruising Princess, but more bandwidth that would result in a more responsive internet would be wonderful.

And another random thought - perhaps some of the younger demographic that is being discussed finds cruising attractive because, they can, indeed, disconnect and not be available 24/7 to the office, etc. Check the e-mail, tell the office no phone, no text, not much communication and get away with it! When I was still working one of the things I loved most was that I was not available to my workaholic executive director who thought all his Sr. Directors needed to be available 24/7, crisis or not. Escape completely - oops, showing my age with that one????

As a supposed member of the "new" Princess demographic here are my thoughts:

---I work in tech development & support...cruises are awesome bc I have no choice but to unplug.

---Arming the employees with tablets will take away from customer service. The employee will be more focused on what the tablet's info is showing and have less eye contact and personal interaction with the passenger.

---Both young & old passengers will storm the purser's desk with torches & pitch forks when the tablets freeze up or a server crashes, rendering "all" info inaccessible...the employees will have to do their jobs "old school."

  6. Greetings...

I want to send along a medium size photo with my parents -- hopefully with magnets on the back for easy hanging -- to help them easily find their cabin...they are in a long stretch of cabins. My dad is not the most patient "navigator".

I don't want to marr the new ship & magnets are so easy. The picture would be 10"x14" at the most...just a photo of their dog.

    Thanks...Sarah

  7. The OP is on Diamond, is an elderly solo traveler dragging his bags with a cane and is looking to avoid using the Japanese train system between the port (Yokohama) and the airport (unknown). Full taxi fare is roughly $150 USD and he was hoping Princess Xfer would get him there on time for cheaper.

Any more advice that involves arrival in a US port is a waste of your time.

I still think my advice would work...if only the haters at Princess would get with the program!! :D

    • Load your luggage so it can be offloaded first?
    • Slip the customs official a few bills to not have any problems with your bags?
    • Provide you with a motorcade to the airport (lights & sirens, of course) to disperse any traffic.
    • Slip airport security a few bills so you can skip the pesky security line and drive right onto the tarmac for boarding.

  8. As a veteran of more than 30 Ocean and River cruises I am well aware of connecting timetables and since my 11:20 flight is the ONLY non-stop to Boston versus other available multiple stop layovers taking 10 or more hours to get there, you can see why I choose it.

My complaint is the answer I got back from Princess...Nothing before 12 noon period

IT COULD HAVE BEEN " WE WILL EXPEDITE YOU AND YOUR LUGGAGE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE TO HELP YOU GET ALTERNATIVE Transportation"

Just simple good CUSTOMER RELATIONS EFFORT !!!!!!

I'm curious as to what exactly you'd like Princess to do to expedite YOUR travel?

I wonder what flights would be available from one of the other ports on your itinerary?

  9. I try to provide my tips in cash at hotels, spas, restaurants, etc. so the service provider can make the best decision about what amount to report to mgmt or IRS.

I also try to be discrete...if the room service attendant or cabin steward is in my cabin I try to provide the tip right there instead of out in the corridor or in the lobby.

The service personnel know what they are supposed to do with cash tips and should act accordingly.

But if the service personnel only have to claim or report a % to mgmt then let them decide how much that should be.

    Let the FLAMES begin....

  10. Does anyone tip them when you arrive onboard?

If so, can they keep those tips or do they have to turn them in?

Here's my 4 cents on this thread...

I think tipping is a very personal thing. There is no right or wrong answer.

I worked my way through high school and college as a waitress & bartender so I have a view & expectation of service that might differ from someone who hasn't worked in that industry.

I generally tip when a service is performed, not necessarily at the end of my vacation...examples from this thread: receive ice & champagne bucket; receive room service order; wave off the cabin steward from the grand kids' cabin...)

I'm never really sure when cash tips are pooled/have to be reported to mgmt.

I try to provide my tips in cash at hotels, spas, restaurants, etc. so the service provider can make the best decision about what amount to report to mgmt or IRS.

Oftentimes in the food & hospitality industry there is the official policy from mgmt on tips as well as the unofficial "understanding" on how tips will be handled.

  11. Hi AF...thanks!

WOW...I enjoy a glass of wine or two. I know what brands/vineyards I enjoy. I will admit to selecting wine by the interesting/beautiful label... :p

I was wondering how the Wine Makers dinner could only cost $45...now I know. It's a shame Princess is doing this...I could see spending maybe $75 on the dinner to taste the wines I wouldn't normally select at home.

  12. Hi...

Most of the 'Friends of Bill W' meetings happen somewhere between 3-5 PM in the wedding chapel.

I've been on cruises that have 8-10 people at many of the daily meetings. I've also been cruises where I was alone or had a couple of people attend. People drop in when they can or get busy with shore excursions, etc.

On one four of us made our own meeting...morning...and met in a corner table in the MDR for breakfast. We also met during the day while in Bermuda.

Princess offered us another space & time but we REALLY needed coffee :-) so they updated the location in the Patter.
