  1. Just checked the excursions which have appeared for my cruise. We're planning on doing the Molli train trip from Warnemunde having done it on a previous occasion. Amused by the advisement X have included being the provision of a helmet, harness and pulley. Perhaps they have it in mind that we travel on top of the train! If not, it is certainly not the sedate excursion I remember.

It must be mixed up it was still sedate in July!

  2. So it was over , have been back 4 weeks now so have had time to reflect on what was originally planned for my 50th Birthday trip, Ok so it was 4 years late but we prepared by having a trip for 7 days to the Fjords to get the feel of cruising, that trip was taken 2 years ago, on the P&O Azura so any comparisons that I do will be based on that experience.

Check in was much better, for the earlier Cruise we waited in a car line for what seemed like hours but was actually about 90 minutes when all we wanted to do was get on the Ship, in fact when we did board it was only 20 minutes until we sailed, with Celebrity we were on Board for 1145H for an 1130H time. Very good Celebrity, I would guess that we had pretty much the same class level on each of the ships but it was great to be on board before 1200H, and we could relax until our cabin was ready at 1340H. We ate the excellent Burgers at the Mast Bar for lunch, and had a few Beers whilst sitting in glorious Sunshine, a fantastic start. They also did Hot Dogs that I can recommend and Fish and Chips that presumably only appear on sailings from the UK, but I didn't try these.

Luggage was delivered to the Cabin about 1430H, and we spent some time unpacking before going exploring. The Cabin was smaller than our previous sailing (were we had a Bath that we never used once!) however we all thought that it was much better designed. The advice re the hump cabin came from Celebrity when we booked and they were correct 1075 was plenty roomy enough for us as the enlarged Balcony was great. If I was a sun worshipper I guess I could say that it was a little shaded but I preferred that to the tiered overlooked balconies of Azura. The layout of the bathroom was great and although small perfectly adequate. Great power in the shower.

Staff, all great and extremely friendly, a credit to themselves and Celebrity, cant believe that they are so happy being away from loved ones 6 months at a time.

I think that I heard they had 77 different nationalities of Staff on board, well done to all.

    Bar Service

Every drink that you wanted really. I am not a big spirits drinker, so Classic Package was fine, tried all the Canadian Whiskies and managed a couple of JDs

as well. There was plenty of choice for me on the wine list both reds and whites at dinner and a refreshing fizzy white during the day. Good choice of non alcoholic drinks, coffees from Al Bacio were good as was the evening Hot Chocolate for my daughter. If anything the area around Al Bacio needs increasing as it does get rather crowded. Only went in Cellar Masters once and that was atmospheric to say the least, Michaels Club was closed to people like me! Spent pre Dinner in Passport Bar

although the non alcoholic mixed drinks were actually poor there when compared to getting them at your table. We also had a JD put on out tab at that bar for no real reason. This was immediately credited by Guest Relations once they were made aware. Ran out of Coke on the last night, all over the ship, actually had a Diet 'Caffeine Free' Coke, didn't taste of anything! I need to ask Coca Cola what is the point in making that? Drinks service from the bar at the table in the MDR was super, always turned up quickly, and if you wanted a refill they were soon available if you asked.

Wouldn't frequent the Sunset bar due to smoking.

    Casino

What a waste of space all those slots are. Sparingly used on this Cruise , could do much better with that space, however I guess they will be used more in US sailings.

I am a very small time Blackjack dabbler but I went to play a couple of times towards the end of the Cruise, felt intimidated as players even on the five dollar table seem to be gambling fifty dollars a hand, too rich for me, so I didn't get to play. Must be a cultural thing!

    Food

This was good. Most mornings had Room Service breakfast that was a great way to start the mornings, and avoid the scramble at the Oceanview Cafe, towards the end of Breakfast service. The hot items on room service were actually hot.

Mast Grill, great Hamburgers , Hot Dogs too much of a temptation just to stay there for lunch!

    Oceanview Cafe

Well what a surprise this was. I mention above about avoiding the scramble at Breakfast time, however that was a perception, when we actually got there it wasn't too bad at all, and we got a table quickly on all occasions. Tables were cleared really quickly, so this obviously helped, and the set up of the stations was great. Carvery of the Day looked good although I never tried it, the Pizzas were realistic, the English Breakfast items were good, including Black Pudding!, tried the Eggs Benedict a couple of times, also very good. The Curries at lunchtime packed a punch and were great. In all a good buffet restaurant. Only thing I would have done differently was to have the late Breakfast items available even later!

The drinks servers were not particularly abundant, but you could easily walk to the bars and get served quickly.

    Cafe Al Bacio

Cakes and Cookies were great so the girls tell me, but they are not on Sworrub's menu!

    MDR

Excellent excellent, sure there were things that we didn't like, but the choice was amazing. The quality of the beef was superb and by far the best that I have had outside the USA. Never even considered for one minute eating in any Speciality Restaurant as this was at a good enough level for us. I took a particular liking to the Caesar Salad, and the Apple Pie A La Mode, and enjoyed both of those on several occasions. No problem in getting any drinks either wine or Bar service, you only had to ask and they were there in 2 minutes, or less. Particularly liked being seating on the Balconies edge, looking down on our subjects (haha!), in fact preferred this to a window seat, were we looked to be moving so fast!

My own opinion is that Dress Code must be enforced strictly. It doesn't spoil my holiday but people who want to down dress have a place and that place is the Oceanview Cafe.

    Qsine

Although we didn't dine in here sat here as we awaited disembarkation all I could think of was how enclosed and claustrophobic it was, I don't think I would have enjoyed eating here as it was one of the poorest spaces on the Eclipse.

    Entertainment

This was appropriate to the cruise I feel see fuller review of the acts in an earlier post, some I liked some not so much, however in general I would say it was all fine. A couple of things though I thought that the trivia quizzes were to short, should be aiming for any hour, really what is the point of it being over in 20 minutes, and the Games available on the Lawn were rather restrictive having set times for example only between 1400 and 1600H, why?, we can manage to throw a few things around without supervision! Seemed a little too regimented.

    Excursions

OK, but I can never get over the fact I don't really like coaches! The Local Life Experience on the Underground in SPb was the highlight for me. We did get everything the narrative on the Excursions said. A surprising highlight was the Vasa Museum, the low light Belgium. Could have been better but for traffic and Weather Copenhagen. The ship also docked a disappointingly long way from the Centre in Copenhagen ridiculous when we were there for 16 hours or so, didn't make seeing Copenhagen on your own easy!

    Overall

I would most certainly travel with Celebrity again. Everything was at a level that we enjoy, never enjoy 'slumming it' on holiday and would much prefer to go less often at the level we want rather than go somewhere we don't like. I know that sounds awfully snobbish, but it is true! The original travel agent we saw when booking our first cruise got us to list the Hotels that we had been to and enjoyed, then she came up with P&O or Celebrity as being the Cruise lines for us, she was correct. We rate Celebrity higher than P&O having now tried them both, and with identical itineraries would probably

choose Celebrity first. I am a little worried about the UK cutbacks in schedule as this limits our choice, (sworrub is sick of flying!), but it is true to say that our next Cruise will probably be to the Canaries or Med, and the line of choice will be Celebrity. (I also want to sail into New York but this will obviously be with the Market leaders in this Cunard!)

One slight issue was that they added $10.50 to my final bill for no reason, immediately credited it when I complained but said that it happens a lot, why why why? only upsets Customer for GBP6.50 whats the point, but if you multiply it by 2800 then I guess there is a point!

Didn't think the the Photograhers were very good, in fact only bought 2 photographs down from 6 last time, would guess though that Sales figures tell Celebrity of this issue.

The one big improvement that all Cruise lines could and should make is to completely ban smoking and make offenders walk the plank (ok so the last bit is a joke!) Loved the Celebrity policy though, as it must be one of the toughest at sea. That automatically puts them up my list of future Cruise suppliers.

If you have read all of my review thanks for sticking with it, hoped it has helped some of you to decide on what to do, but I can thoroughly recommend Celebrity and the Baltic itinerary.

  3. We sailed away from Copenhagen on the stroke of midnight, and on out way home to 'Blighty'. It was the last formal night on the Thursday evening , we bumped into Tenors Of Rock in the lift on the way to dine. They were dressed in black basically. They rushed off to get changed, as they felt somewhat underdressed. We arrived to be seated for dinner at about seven, this was the first night that we couldnt be seated on Select dining straight away. Camped out in a packed Martini Bar, whose waiters seemed to spend more time in the Dining Room looking for people who had ordered drinks but had been called into dining. We had to wait about 40 minutes or so, but that actually worked to our advantage, as we were still in the Restaurant when 'Party

Time ' happened. This consisted of the Ships heiracy thanking everyone for their efforts over the Cruise. The MDR was transformed by flashing and colour changing lights in the ceiling and a large 'Conga'!. CD Sinan (Sinbad as Mike Doyle dubbed him) led the festivities for the last time as he was off to the Med to continue his induction to all things Celebrity. We would have missed all of this had we dined at the time we turned up, glad of the wait!

CD Sinan and Members of the Catering Team

    ezmvk4.jpg

As we had several different waiters and assistants throughout the Cruise we didnt really get to know our waiting staff, they were all efficient and friendly, however as previous mentioned Silva (from India) and Deepuksing (from Mauritus) were the outstanding combination. How Deepuksing managed to keep smiling whenever and wherever you saw him is a mystery to me.

And that was it really, we had a Top Chef menu on the final night, wasn't impressed with that, thought that the normal fodder was better!, and at 20 minutes after our appointed 0900H we disappointedly departed the Eclipse , quickly finding our luggage and that was it . A trip 36 months in the making was over (We had to do a trial first to see if one of our Party could cope with being at Sea)

Back home and changeable weather! YUK YUK work on Monday as well!

Final opinionated views will follow in a couple of days!

  4. So we are homeward bound.

    Helsinki was the next stop.

Booked on a excursion today, to the Rock Church, which I thought was unremarkable, went to the Sibelius statue, again unremarkable, and had a brief walk around Helsinki, weather still excellent.6pqp8y.jpg

This was the most unremarkable stop so far, so so. Started to feel ill now with no energy and heavy legs. Good job 2 sea days coming up.

Spent an afternoon in bed sleeping and watching Gravity on the in house movie Channel. Guess it would have been better in 3D and on a big screen, but I just had no energy.

We sailed into Copenhagen. Strange that the Denmark/Sweden Bridge is too low to let Eclipse sail under it, so you have to go all the way around to get to Copenhagen. I dont think time was an issue at this point though. Still feeling quite second hand went on a trip around Copenhagen where the traffic was very busy and the weather the worse that we had had all trip. Got a little wet on the open back of a boat. Have been to Copenhagen a few times so it was all very routine for me. The centre was pretty much like a building site, apparently they are building an underground. The point of docking was miles away from the centre and most definately not walkable. Needed a shuttle bus to get into Copenhagen. It was a new bit of the Port, no facilities. Shuttle bus exceptionally busy with queues.

    27zhtzm.jpg

Weather and the lingering cold didnt help my general mood. Soon it was time to leave and our final two days!

Mood was lifted by the evenings show The Tenors of Rock, these guys can belt out a tune!

  5. Off to the Peterhof Palace today.

    25qbyhh.jpg

It was once again a fine morning and after heading back into SPb centre off we went on the journey to Peterhof Palace.

Dire warnings about the stealing of passports once again abounded. Traffic was a bit chaotic in SPb today but we got through that and arrived at Peterhof about an hour after leaving the ship. What an impressive place this is. The walk around at times resembled a route march and the bottles of water that we picked up were invaluable. Temperature must have been in the mid 30's. Now we were some of the younger cruisers and it was tough, I don't know how some of the older ones felt but it was taxing. This is a massive park and it is spread over a large area, to see lots it is a rush on a half a day tour, if you dont want to rush really you need a day around here as the distance to walk in a short time may well be an issue.

    161j6o0.jpg

Viewed 'real Russia on the way and it wasn't pretty, glad we saw it though!

You can get a false impression just going around the touristy spots, but this looked an bit industrial to say the least.

    2ylofp1.jpg

The scale of Peterhof is what hits you, massive absolutely massive, no wonder the locals decided to try Communism if there leaders lived like this whilst they were in poverty!

The inevitable happened of course and we were late. We had to stop for a toilet break as someone didn't dehydrate enough in the afternoon sun, we nearly left him behind, he just about saw us disappearing over the horizon, and caught us up. (Nb toilets are few far between and full in Peterhof, guess the masses dont need them!)

Off we rushed to our Hydrafoil, and inspired selection of ways to return, it was a great way to return to the ship, would reccomend this way of getting to Peterhof!

    1611ao5.jpg

After about 15 minutes the Eclipse returned to our view

    ortmjt.jpg

and then a further 15 minutes saw us docking at the Hydrafoil port after cruising up the Neva River. Back onto the coach and back onto the Eclipse.

All we could think about was a few Drinks and a bit of high jinx on our verandah!

    28btkjs.jpg

The Eclipse slid silently out if Russia, and that was it we were on the way home (boo!)

The evening was great! This was Mike Doyle night, see above!

It was almost light until midnight as well, ho hum, homeward bound!

  6. Doing the fjords cruise on eclipse in September,

Stops are Bergen, flam, geiranger, alesund, stavanger.... Anyone going on this trip.. Set sail aug 30 from Southampton, and anyone got suggestions on things to do... Excursions to take?

Generally do my own thing especially if there is a hoho bus, but Flam doesn't have one... Should I book an excursion for the railway there, or just wing it?..

    All suggestions very much appreciated.

Flam railway to Myrdal, then 'normal'railway to Voss, then coach back, best excursion Ive ever been on. The waterfall halfway up the Flam railway is fantastic.t0ncs9.jpg

  7. Decided to split things up a little.

You will already have seen a few things from me about the Entertainment.

Here is the complete rundown of my thoughts

Shows, with staff dancers and singers

    Edge/Eclipse/Ovations

    Edge

Classic rock and pop, these dancers can move, the singers well good enough for a Cruise ship I suppose. Not that I wish to be unduly harsh and they were pleasant enough on the ear, but of you are looking for a virtuoso performance you are in the wrong place.

    Enjoyed the aerial stuff.

Would be number 2 in my rating of the 'shows' by the entertainment staff

    Eclipse

If you like a tumbling Circus this was for you again lots of energy, and some of the aerial work was stunning, however it would rank 3 with me.

    Loved Peng Fi Su!

    Ovations

All the songs from the Musicals, loved this show, would have to rank number 1 with me for the in house performers. Very good. Something to be said I guess for singing en masse.

    Other show

Peng Fi Su, and the magic show. Cant understand why this was only a matinee, deserved to be every night, OK, ok so I am a sucker for magic, but this guy incredible, a must must see if he is on your ship.

    Visiting Entertainers

Adrian Walsh I enjoyed this comedian, see more detail in a previous post.

Mike Doyle Comedian/Vocalist, Fantastic loved him had the place in tears, from his impression of the Captain over the ships communications when the Captain appeared to be lost, to the 60 minute show that seemed to last for 5 minutes, you must go to see him if he is on your ship! Excellent.

    Beatles Celebration

Must admit that wasnt really looking forward to this as whilst acknowledging their massive impact on the pop business I have never really been a fan. These guys looked a bit like them sang the songs, from a fantastic back catologue and generally had the place rocking and indeed dancing in the aisles. Very good entertainment if you didnt take it too seriously.

    Tenors Of Rock

Now you are moving onto my type of music. This rocked the Eclipse, by far the loudest show, a few complaints no doubt, but filled with energy and a different take on my favourites. Very good

Appeared again on the final show doing all Queen numbers, again very good. Bumped into 2 of them in a lift on formal night when we were all smart and they still in their jeans and T shirts, oh how we laughed as they felt underdressed, nice guys!

Stars Of St Petersberg (2230H a bit late!)

I went to sleep not because of them but the clocks moving forward and the all day sightseeing took its toll, my wife said they were good could sing and were full of energy, from the 15 minutes I was awake I would agree.

    Peter Grant

Only caught a little of him at a show, was OK if you like that laid back swing stuff. Had a good voice.

    Luca Volpe

Well he's a mentalist so hes got a problem with me, some might enjoy this but I didnt really Audience reaction was muted, so I guess I was not alone in my thought.

    Nicola Loud

Didnt see her solo show, saw about 15 minutes on the last evening

was a good bit of fiddling, again though not really my sort of stuff!

    So in summary

    Must see

    Mike Doyle

    Tenors of Rock

    Peng Fi Su

    OK

    Nicola Loud

    Adrian Walsh

    Stars of St Petersberg

    Stay in the bar

    Luca Volpe

  8. Up at 0600H for the St Petersberg call, and my first step into Russia.

This was seriously getting early now, what with always 'lets have one last drink' in an evening and getting up to get breakfast we were now arising at 0300H UK time, the clocks moving forward 2 days in row was not well received by me at least! Must be getting old.

It took about 45 mins to get through immigration, not too bad at all.

An uneventful sightseeing trip around St Petersberg, with the Peter and Paul territory was followed by a visit to The Church of the Spilled Blood. Very impressive.

    14t8xas.jpg

    t7cuud.jpg

The afternoon trip was incredible. Did the ships 'Local Life Experience' tour including a trip on the underground and

    afternoon tea.

    wvofms.jpg

This was what it was all about, mixing with locals and having horror tales about losing your passport and how it is held to ransom. The head count at virtuaully every stop just added to the tension, you knew we where somewhere that required some care. The excellent guide was still at University and was the best guide we had all tour, if you read the Evgenia, congratulations! Loved the head counts by having to hold your hand up. It all added to a sense of wow! Temperature 30 degrees all day, felt hotter in the sun.

    Underground and Evgenia

    2qntoue.jpg

Got back and attended the show by some Russian singers and dancers, fell asleep during the show, just tired very tired!

Fortunately we had a late start tomorrow!

  9. Tallinn

    xpu32u.jpg

The only port that we didn’t have an excursion booked for. Leisurely departure from the ship, again following a verandah breakfast, and a stroll into the Old town. Walked to the top

and then back to the bottom as the guidebooks recommend.

    313k2td.jpg

Stopped for a beer at a Greek Taverna, SAKU!, €4.50 for half a litre, it was good.

    2nhdg7o.jpg

Air temperature must now be about 30 degs, stocked up on souvenirs at the market in the main square, found a cash machine, got some Euros out with no problem, was tapped up for a Euro for a smoke, by a local, and then got slightly lost. Ended up by a coach shuttle bus pick up, and a guy and his wife in front of us turns around and says 'Where are you from?', I said inbetween Birmingham and Wolverhampton, and he said' Your not a Dingle are you? (Dingle being a derogatory term for supporters of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC) I replied no I don’t like them, at which point he spotted my West Bromwich Albion necklace and gave me a hug right there in Tallinn! Didn’t ever meet him again so I guess that he was on one of the other 4 Cruise ships in Tallinn that day. Walked back to the ship via a very very busy intersection, keep your wits about you, and past the Balloon ride, which goes up to 400 meters.

    2r548yu.jpg

I think that the prices in old Town Tallinn are at a level that tourists will pay, cant believe that items are that price over the rest of Estonia, as they were just average Euro prices, a little cheaper than the other Scandinavian countries but not massively so. The Old town must be deserted when Cruise ships not in, there were at least 5 on the day we were in but it never felt paticularly uncomfortable walking around, just a little busy. Followed the 'Mein Schiff 2' out of Port and all the away to Russia! Sea seemed to have strange stripes when we were up in the Sky lounge later.

Clocks forward 1 hour aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, getting seriously early in the mornings now for my body clock! Struggling to get to sleep early enough to wake up at an appropriate hour.

    2ur5zr8.jpg

    Eclipse in Tallinn

    ev9tae.jpg

  10. Early breakfast on the verandah, excellent Mushroom Omlette, delivered by the ever smiling cabin attendant from the West Indies St Elmore, and great weather.

    mtxpie.jpg

Had arisen early to see the cruise in through the Stockholm Archepelego and wasn’t disappointed. If you are visiting this port it is worth getting up early to see this.

    eu0p6q.jpg

    jpvc0i.jpg

Apparently the Eclipse is the largest ship ever to have made that navigation and I can understand why. What a great cruise in. Docked close to the centre. Was about a 2.5km walk to the actual centre of Stockholm, but plenty of transport options from this point for the independant traveller. Was docked opposite the Theme park felt sick looking at that ride that just drops you. Didn’t dwell on this but got straight onto the excursion bus and off we went for a scenic tour of Stockholm (where I have been many times before) and the 'Vasa' Museum . Guide was impressed with my Swedish which consists of three words being Tak- Thanks, Fem Ol- Five beers, don’t ask why the only number I know is five, but it does make friends in a bar, especially if you can afford to pay for the five beers.

    35i114y.jpg

Guide said we will go straight to Vasa as it gets busy later. We must have been about the second coach to arrive. No queue, wandered straight in, attended the film in German with English subtitles,

other language screenings were available including Chinese!, but we were able to read the subtitles Ok, and very interesting it was, you do need to see the film to get the story. We then explored around the ship and the mocked up interiors, now I'm no shipbuilder but no way was that ever going to stay afloat, above the water line seemed about 20 times the size of below the waterline, once you add in the cannon on at least 2 decks then the phrase top heavy comes to mind, inevitabley it actually managed less than 1000M into its maiden voyage, before it toppled over, very close to where The Eclipse was docked. Now this ship is incredibly well preserved and I really enjoyed my visit, which was surprising for a single exbit museum.

    osvdzt.jpg

    2586jr6.jpg

Upon departure the wisdom of the tour guide became obvious as the longest queue I witnessed all trip existed to get into the 'Vasa', and we avoided it by being early. A couple of hours riding around central Stockholm and back to the ship. Weather had been fantastic all day. Set sail about 1500H and was just still in the Archepelego when we sat down to Dinner. Had a lurch through the white wines this evening, all looked good and again 5-8 choices which is fine for me.

Enjoyed a Chardonnay, or 2. Clocks forward 1 hour.

  11. Why would a fake beer cost 7.50?

.....because prices have nothing to do with cost, just what they can get.

Having said that I saw no-one drinking O'Douls in 14 days! I guess if you have the premium package you are not really interested in non alcoholic drinks. (no offence intended)

  12. Are drinks prices on eclipse published with the service included then? Does thus affect drinks package pricing at all?

Its a little bit insulting to the UK Customers really as it would seem that we are unable to grasp that all the prices on the menu have to have 15% added, it may also be explained by the lack of a tipping culture in the UK.

However the situation as I see it is that Celebrity has a fleetwide price list.

When the Eclipse sails out of Southampton the prices on the list are increased by as near as possible to 15%. This is reflected on the lists in the bars/restaurants The limits on the Classic Package are also increased by 15%.

Hence when a wine is listed at $9, you pay $10.50 on Eclipse out of Southampton, the limit on the Classic though for wine has also increased to $10.5, so its all the same. So in the case of a $6 beer, its actually $7 out of UK but the limit on the Classic has also been increased to $7.

Lots of issues caused in May when the prices went up for UK sailings but the classic limit didnt catch up for a couple of sailings. Also there was an actual price increase that has subsequently been more or less completely rolled back, only big exceptions really being Draft beer now not availble on Classic, O'Douls, and Jameson.

  13. I have just read on a review that Eclipse now docks at a newly built pier for larger ships when in Copenhagen .Can anyone confirm if this is the case or not as the new dock is 6km from the centre and would require the use of a shuttle service or 1x per hour bus ?

This is correct, in my opinion not walkable, but then I am a little lazy.

Couldnt comment on it being 6Km, as my sense of distance is rubbish.

We docked end July on Eclipse so this is as up to date as it gets.

Shuttle was $12 and for me that would have been a bargain, but was on a trip! (Just guess I'm lazy)
