Dive Knife

I have a blunt tip dive knife that I usually bring along when I go SCUBA diving just in case I get tangled up or something.

Do you think I will have problem bringing it onboard with my gear?

Thanks,

Drew

You should be able to put it in your checked luggage on the plane. I would probably carry it on the ship and show them it is a dive knife if they ask. My friend with whom I travel always carries a dive knife---she has all of her other stuff too---she takes her own BC and mask and fins.

You probably will not have a problem bringing it onboard when you first board the ship because it will be in your checked luggage. The big hassle comes when you want to take the knife off the ship at the first port of call. The security will take your knife away from you when you return to the ship. They will keep it for you and return it the last night of the trip. You might be able to get it back for shore excursions, then again, you might not. It won't matter that it is a blunt tip or that their actions make no logical sense.

I suggest that you leave the knife at home and avoid the hassle. If entanglement is a possible issue for you, then a pair of snips is a better option anyway.

I did not have a problem on return to the ship on my first dive in Coz, but coming back from GC they took it away and would not return it until the final night. I would not count on having it the entire time--you may get lucky, but maybe not. Have fun!!

In my humble opinion (ahem) one of the benifits of participanting in an organized tour is that your don't have to think about stuff like that. Your DM will have a knife, probably a light, a pocket mask and also check all the first aid equipment on board. Bringing a knife on a guided dive trip is like bringing your own napkins to a restaurant.

If you're planning on taking guided dive trips, I'd leave the knife at home. If for some reason, you'll be leading the dive or doing some shore diving, then MAYBE, I'd go through the hassle.

I brought my own gear on the Glory recently and was checked for a knife before leaving the ship in Cozumel. They actually opened my dive bag and searched it. They also gave it a more cursory check upon return. I would just leave it at home and as post above noted...snips are the way to go.

Just got off the Grand Princess out of Galveston.

FYI, they confiscated my dive knife from my checked luggage as soon as it got onboard. Not a big deal, but couldn't get it back until we disembarked.

Actually, I had intended to remove it from my bag. The day before our cruise I looked through my bag and couldn't find it - figured I must have taken out previously. It's a very large bag with all sorts of scuba goodies in it, but it couldn't hide from the X-Ray machine!

Since we drove to Galveston, there was no issue with the airlines.

p.s. I wonder if Princess flagged me from this message board.

Don't really understand why they confiscate dive knives. I had a steak knife at dinner every night on my cruise. I sure could do much more damage with a steak knife then a blunt tip dive knife.

I did get to "check out" my knife in port when I wanted it.

I take shears as mention above by Bruce R. In fact, he is the one that made the original suggestion that caused me to get them. I use a knive when I dive locally but for cruises or flying will always take the shears. Just saves a lot of hassle from the ships crew.

HI Gang,

OK, so I'm cruising on EOS last Nov to the West Carib out of MIA. Just as you say...dive knife is packed well in my large suitcase. Magically my luggage shows up, and hey my dive knife is still here.

Cozumel was awesome diving with Victor at Sand Dollar (Hi Laura) and wore knife throughout the dive. I figure I've been diving for 32 yrs and always wore it so I'm not stopping now. Many of us are responsible divers and don't damage things by trying to pry of souvenirs from the bottom.

As you said Laura, going back on the ship they want to take my dive knife because it's a restricted weapon. I indicated that it was they who allowed me to take it onboard in the first place, and that as this was the end of the 5th day on a seven day cruise, what would be my problem retaining the knife in my luggage? Answer...it's a restricted weapon. Playing the devil's advocate I indicated that if it was a restricted weapon then why do they sell them openly in dive shops? It's a restricted weapon.

Bottom Line, I gave them the knife BUT LEARN FROM THIS, on RCCL they do not bring it to your cabin the night prior to disembarkation. You're physically required, after you clear customs and immigration in MIA, to walk down to the next terminal building to retrieve your restricted weapon.

Needless to say, it's a darn inconvenience, especially when you're trying to get a bus to the airport car rental agency.

NEXT TIME - DEAR KNIFE, WE'VE BEEN TOGETHER FOR 32 YRS BUT, YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO COME ON CRUISES WITH ME ANYMORE.

And with that,

Ciao for now!!!

I always pack a two inch blunt end dive knife (which is attached to my BC) in my check thru. Once I return from diving they take it when reboarding (Saftey and all, you know). The not 4 hrs later @ supper they deliver a razor sharp pointy steak knife with dinner. DAAAAAAAHHHHHHH. Someone needs to review the policy.

I have never had mine confiscated, but I guess I will quit taking it on cruises and Places where I'll be on escorted tours. In St. Lucia it is illegal to have it on the dive boats as are gloves.

A lot of the shops in the Caribbean really don't like you having a knife on you. We go to GC two to three times a year cruising or land and always whatever shop we go with they ask for no knifes.

I carry dive scissors that we carry in our dive shop. They work just a good. the knife is one less hassle you have to deal with when if foreign land.:)

The same is true in Cozumel for diving in the Marine Park, which encompasses all the dive sites from the town to the south tip of the island.
