jencredible Posted September 16, 2009 #1 Share Posted September 16, 2009 So I got a call this morning fromt he upgrade fairy-1st ever, but it is only our second cruise ever!Anyways, he offered a Penthouse Suite for an additional $750 -more than our OV...SWEET!! Yeah but, I totally don't want to spend that much more than we already have.. i'd rather spend it on DOD's. My question is, what are the odds of someone from say a regular Balcony taking the Penthouse Suite, and then we are offered a Balcony? I would be happy to spring an extra 100 or 2 but not $750...Just curious, although I'm sure I'd have a better chance of winning big in the casino! PROCRUISE Posted September 16, 2009 #2 Share Posted September 16, 2009 None of us will ever have the answers regarding upgrades. We are platinum card holders with Carnival and have never been given or offered an upgrade. Recently we went on a cruise with another very well know cruise line for only our second time with them, with a balcony cabin. Ten days before the cruise we were contacted and offered a mini suite for only $100.00 per person more.It was glorious, but we never would have paid what they asked you to pay to upgrade. momofzeke Posted September 16, 2009 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2009 I would ask how much it would be to upgrade to a balcony. I would not pay that much extra to upgrade to a suite. You are right....that is a LOT of DOD's! :D
Traveler353 Posted September 16, 2009 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Some of these "UP-SELL" offers seem pretty good but many are not. Many times the passanger could have gotten the cabin at a better price to begin with using one of the then current offers/specials. I have been trully upgraded twice and have never received the "up-sell" call.
cooncat_mom Posted September 16, 2009 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2009 Just got a call from the upsell fairy to go to Penthouse Suite on our Freedom sailing. Since they were offering the suite next to the cabin we originally booked, I suspect that's why we got the call. (We did take it!)
eggypann Posted September 16, 2009 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2009 I've read posts here where the upsell offer was too expensive and the CC member offered a different amount. It was turned down at first but the CCer went back a couple times and stated her offer - ultimately they accepted it and it was for a lot less than their initial offer! dijid Posted September 17, 2009 #7 Share Posted September 17, 2009 We were offered an upsell to an owner's suite from an OV. My thought was that all those with suites must have already turned it down if they were that far down the list offering the up-sell. So my thought is the odds are extremely stacked against you being offered a balcony.
kc5grw Posted September 17, 2009 #8 Share Posted September 17, 2009 If so many folks weren't so willing to spend more money the upsells there would be a lot more actual upgrades. They're obviously trying to fill the ship by moving folks out of lower category rooms that are easier to sell. Of course if they can sell the upgrades that's preferable for them, but if nobody bought the upsells, they would still upgrade people because the ultimate goal is to fill every stateroom on the ship. Just for clarification purposes on terminology.... if it is FREE .... we call it a visit from the UPGRADE fairy... if it costs more money ... we call it a visit from the UPSELL fairy.... The UPSELL fairy called me yesterday (or the day before) with that same offer from the 6B to a Cat 12 on the Valor. We turned it down as well. Reason 1.... that is $750.00 I can spend on something else. Reason 2.... it is probably the one over the piano bar and if you are not the kind that closes the piano bar down at 1AM....you are going to hear it in your cabin. Now I do not know for certain that was the piano bar cabin...just a hunch. We have been visited by the UPGRADE fairy one time in all these years.... getting a freebie from an Interior Spa Cabin to a Spa Balcony Cabin....... on the Splendor ...which was nice. I read about that...and that is a cool idea. I am happy where our cabin is on this one...but I may try that the next time I get an upsell call.... cooncat_mom Posted September 17, 2009 #11 Share Posted September 17, 2009 I actually thought about doing that, but she caught me on the way to work and the price was in a range close to what I would have offered, so....I did think about strawberries or a bottle of scotch, but chickened out. I stink at haggling!
