John answers the smokers

The discussion is NOT about waiting hours to have a cigarette. Some posters want smoking banned in balcony, staterooms, casino, and piano room. Are you willing to wait a couple of days? Most of us have said over and over that we don't care about the casino. We only want ONE room.

Please give the same advice of being mindful to the non-smokers. Everyone should be mindful of others.

Of course smokers should have a place to go and smoke. There is no way a smoker can go "days" without a cigarette. That is unrealistic.

Unfortunately, on our Valor cruise....smokers were their own worst enemy.

Smoking on the Valor was allowed in the casino but you had to be "on the carpet". This was an attempt to keep children who walk down the Promenade from being exposed.

Sadly, there a group of 5 smokers were corrected on the first night about making sure they were on the carpet and no smoking in the Promenade.

So, they thought it was cute to light up in the Promenade (before you get to the casino section) and them walk straight into the casino before Security had the chance to correct them. Then they would stand at the EDGE of the carpet and blow smoke directly into the Promenade.

Now "technically" they were on the carpet...so they were not breaking any rules. But they were blowing the smoke into the Promenade on purpose to "protest" the restriction.

Unfortunately, I have seen this kind of "challenging" behavior on all our cruises this year.

So when Carnival cracks down even more by moving the smoking section to the inside wall of the casino (thereby further restricting the amount of space you have to smoke) .... smokers have no one but themselves to blame.

I think if smokers had policed themselves over the years....there would not be as many restrictions.

What I don't understand is...the non smokers always talk about how they are the majority so if this were true then how could there possibly be enough smoke to bother you?

That's a great question/comment, but in all honesty IF you were a non smoker you'd know the answer. If you were a non smoker, you'd understand how accute your sense of smell could be and how it only takes one cigarette to bother someone.

That is the honesty truth...my honest truth anyway.

In fact, you don't even have to have a lit cigarette in your hand. If you come into the ship from outdoors after just having smoked, I will be able to smell it on you. It does fade after a while (somewhat) but a little always lingers.

A couple of days is an exaggeration. There are still several places outdoors under cover. I tend to book inside cabins and I dont smoke in them to be mindful to the guests to follow. Non-smokers don't put my health at risk so I don't see why they should be mindful of my smoking. P.S. I know what this discussion is about.

Because you put their health at risk.

You completely misinterpreted her sentence. She was being courteous to the non-smokers...

As an ex smoker I can tell you that is soo true. Never realized how getting in an elevator with someone who just finished a cigarette is the second best thing to having one.

My sense of smell is really heightened. Most perfumes or colognes are much more aggravating to me and cause me to be short of breath and to cough. Other things that are sprayed cause me problems - room air freshners, cooking sprays, etc.

I can't very well ask strangers not to wear cologne. My family doesn't because of my reactions but since it is my problem I have to adjust my life.

I really feel bad for people who have negative reactions to smoke but as long as smokers are following the rules it is not the smoker's problem.

I absolutely agree, and like I said, most non smokers have been dealing with it graciously for their entire lives. I would hope there aren't THAT many non smokers being obnoxious....

just as I would hope there are not many smokers doing things like LHP posted she saw. {how utterly juvenile!!}

NOT from anything a smoker does

From ACS:

Cigarette smoking accounts for at least 30% of all cancer deaths.

So that leaves 70% that die from cancer without anything to do with smoking.. NOT "second hand smoke, not smoking... just living...

Here's some of the harmful chemicals that a smoker puts into the air according to the National Cancer Institute

"

arsenic (a heavy metal toxin)

benzene (a chemical found in gasoline)

beryllium (a toxic metal)

cadmium (a metal used in batteries)

chromium (a metallic element)

ethylene oxide (a chemical used to sterilize medical devices)

nickel (a metallic element)

polonium–210 (a chemical element that gives off radiation)

vinyl chloride (a toxic substance used in plastics manufacture"

Second hand smoke kills at least 3,000 people a year. Not to mention the 170,000 smokers (using your 30% figure) that will die every year.

I have seen both sides of this debate as my parents are avid smokers and will defend their right to smoke right to the day they die. Which sadly will probably be attributed to smoking.

I have no beef with smoking or non-smoking... I have a beef with the erosion of rights... PERIOD. When someone can dictate that you cannot do something LEGAL in your own home or car then we had better look for the shackles on our hands...

I completely agree that smoking is not good, that it smells, that people dislike it around them... I do not agree that it kills everyone around them and I abhor the erosion of legal rights by mob mentality.

This sort of right wing stuff does not belong on a cruise board.

This board is about cruising, not politics.

Now that's just not reasonable. They don't care about themselves much less anyone else.

What an irresponsible thing to say. You are no better!! Lumping all smokers into a group of people who are inconsiderate and who don't care. Who are you to judge? I agree that those particular smokers who insinuate their habit upon others are very bad, but you should not make such a blanket statement.

Unbelievable!

I don't smoke, but I know for a fact that there are plenty who do and they ARE considerate of those who don't.
