Valparaiso vs. Santiago Hotels

Getting closer and closer to our honeymoon on the Veendam 12/21 from Valparaiso to Rio! Question about hotels pre-cruise...

We're flying in from LAX, arriving Saturday morning early (8:00ish). We'll need a hotel Saturday night and Sunday night... Wondering if we're better off staying in Santiago or Valparaiso, or one night in one one in the other... We'd like to have some things to see and do!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Santiago by all means - lots to see and do in a very vibrant city. Valparaiso is an overgrown seaport but the oldest part is interesting as it is built up hillsides, some of which have elevators to get from one level to the other. But Santiago, being the capital and nestled at the foothills of the Andes, is the prime tourist site.:)
