Miami airport to cruise in Fort Lauderdale

Can anyone recommend the best way from Miami Airport to join a cruise the following day in Fort Lauderdale. We need to book a hotel for one night and we don't know wether to stay near the airport and travel to port next day, or to travel near the port and spend the night in hotel there. I presume there will be nothing around the airport where as we could walk around the port. If you can suggest a suitable hotel that would be great. Thanks.

I suggest that you rent a car for the day (MIA to FLL) and stay in the FLL area - hotels are a little cheaper and the beach is good. You can shuttle from the rental car turn-in to the port. Miami aiport area hotels have nothing around and I would suggest them only if you are arriving late and just want a place to sleep. Don't rent a car for downtown Miami or South beach hotels - the parking will run $20-30/day.
