How to get to Trunk Bay from St. Thomas ?

We were on Serenade last year in January and decided to go to Trunk Bay beach. We took a taxi to Red Hook (about 30 min) but then had to wait for the ferry as they only left on the hour when we had read that they leave every half hour. We missed it by 10 minutes or so. Got to Cruz bay ferry terminal and took a taxi to Trunk Bay which was beautiful but only got to stay a little over an hour so as to get back for the ferry back to Red Hook and then taxi back to the ship. In retrospect I would have done the ship's excursion (St. John on your own) that takes you to Cruz bay right from the cruise pier and back. You still only have limited time on St. John but don't have to worry about taxi and Red Hook ferry and the cost was about the same. We're on Brilliance in a week doing a B2B and decided to do something on St. Thomas because it just takes too long with the travel back and forth to St. John to get much time to do anything there.

Yes, the ferry from town or the cruise dock is about the same time and cost as the Red Hook option, you're just not on the water as long with the Red Hook option and that's usually the better choice.

The St John trip is a longer one and not for everyone, even with 10 hours in port. We prefer to rent a car and tour St Thomas and hit a few of our favorite spots like Sapphire Beach or Secret Harbor, Island Time in Red Hook for pizza or Iggie's at Bolongo, and Paradise Point for their Bushwacker and view before returning the car or returning to the ship. Just a more leisurely day.

The safari taxis differ in size, the largest hold 25, others 20, 15, and 10. They make regular runs to the East End beaches (Coki, Smith Bay, Sapphire, and Secret Harbor) as well as the Red Hook ferry. We just spent a week at Sapphire and all of these are a short drive.

We took New Horizon's day sail last week and it was great for the price. Their Breakaway boats are also out of the Sapphire Marina as well as Yacht Nightwind, Double Header, and others. Pirates Penny/Stormy Petrel and a few others are out of the nearby Red Hook Marina.

The New Horizon daysail works well for cruisers because they go from 10AM - 4 PM. We hit Honeymoon and Caneel and then St James island. Their "Nooner" is a very good drink!

Any other questions on the East End or ST John feel free!

Sorry for bringing up an old post but this thread showed up on my google search and like others above said the islander post is super informative. I have a quick question, I will be arriving on a holland america cruise to St.Thomas from 8-5 PM and would like to take the charlotte amalie ferry. Looking at the schedule http://www.usvi.net/information/transportation/ferry-schedules/st-thomas-to-st-john-ferry-schedule/. The first one would be 10 am which works out great but the return one, looks like the only option would be 3:45 PM with a 40 mins travel time. If everything works as plan, that should be fine with the 5 pm cruise departure time. My question is for people who have done this, would this be cutting it close or should work out fine? Another thing is, since the 3:45 pm one is the last one from cruz bay, would that one ever sell out? Thank you advance anyone.
