Artimis 14/11/09 Colon Port

Hi I am going on Artimis on 14th Nov to Carribean. We have a stop in Colon near Panama Canal. I have been on loney planet site who say this is the pits and lots of crime and poverty. Normally we do out own thing when in port can anyone give us any tips/advice in this port of call. Or should we just book the P&O trip? Thanks this is my first posting so please be gentle.:p

I'd definitely recommend doing the train across to Panama City.

Hi we were there 5-6 years ago, we went on a P&O city tour. From the port to the city the 2 coaches had a police escort and a spare bus, in case of breakdown I guess. During the walking tour in the city armed police escorted the group and kept an eye on you if you wandered, it was done discretely but it was still an escort.

 

I would say do not travel independantly, it may have improved since we went but I doubt it.
