Rhodes: what are the "must sees" ??

Recommended Posts

We did the Windstar Aegean cruise a few summers ago and saved our beaching for Bodrum and Mykonos. The main town of Rhodes is very beautiful, wide cobbled pedestrian streets with lots of outdoor cafes and upscale shops. The big attraction on our cruise at least was the Acropolis of Lindos, which involves a good hike up the hill but is very interesting and worthwhile. That was a morning excursion. In town, we visited the Castle of St John, which is very well preserved and is noted for its fine mosaic floors. You don't need an excursion for the town, it is very compact and you can just walk up to the castle. There is a small entrance fee. It is worth about an hour or so. Rhodes also has a very small Jewish museum with an interesting history of its own that details the deportation of the Rhodes Jewish community (also worth about half an hour or so). Otherwise, we strolled the town. It was a very pleasant day.

I think Lindos is overrated as a place to visit. Pretty view but not much original in the way of ancient architecture to see. I would have preferred to stay in Rhodes city and walk around the old streets. The palace with the mosaics is a must, really spectacular.

We enjoyed Rhodes on our cruise last October. We hired a taxi on the pier. We were lucky to get George, and he was fabulous. He took us up to the Acropolis where we could see where the Agean and Mediterranean Seas meet. Also stopped at the fort and the church. He guided us to a local ceramics factory where my DW found a Grecian vase. She had searched for one all during the trip and found just what she wanted there. After our tour, we walked through the town and did some leisurely shopping.
