Carombola Botanical Gardens - worth it?

Has anyone been to the Carombola botanical gardens? Is it worth the visit for adults? Also, do you know if you can just take a taxi there or do you have to be on a tour? How much was the taxi and will it wait for you there?

Thanks for your help!

The gardens are lovely, although not that big. After a walk through the flatter area where the different plants and trees are identified, you have a nice nature trail in the forest going up a hill, where you can see butterflies and woodpeckers. At the top there is a beautiful view of the ocean and mangroves.

Thanks Roos. How much time did you spend there? I'm wondering if it's worth it to just take a cab so we can spend as much time as we want there or if we'll get enough time to see it on an excursion where it's one of many things we'd be going to.

I spent about an hour there. There's plenty of time to do something else. West End is about a 5 minute drive from there. The Butterfly Garden is just outside West End. There's good snorkeling right from the shore in Half Moon Bay, lots of watering holes, restaurants and souvenir shops, my favorite being the Waves of Art, which features artwork by local artists.

Did you have any problems with mosquitos in the gardens? Or do they only come out at dusk?

thanks!

You definately have to put on insect repellent before going into the gardens. There wasn't much there to see last week, no birds, no blooms. Just the tropical flora and trees. It had been raining, so was hot and sticky too. We didn't think it was that great and saw it while on a tour so to speak. We found some labels to some of the stuff, but it wasn't always for the plant that was there. Not the best island gardens in our humble opinions.
