Tipping

Hi all

Im reading various amounts for tipping so Im wondering what most people do. We will be on a four night cruise on the Wonder, with a deluxe family stateroom with a verandah. Some site say to tip in cash, others say you can pre pay the gratuity with a credit card. Id like to pay in cash, for our room attendant and our meal servers. I always doubt if you pay in advance that your servers and room staff actually GET the money. Some sites price out tips per person, others dont and Im QUITE confused. What is the average total amount a family of four would usually leave for the meal servers and the cabin attendant? I realize that the person who delivers your room service order gets tipped at the time, so Im going to have ones on hand for that.

DCL's recommended tip amount totals 12.00 per guest/per day (including children). This covers your stateroom host (4.00), server (4.00), asst. server (3.00) and head server (1.00). So a family of 4 should plan 48.00 per day for tips.

You will receive a form with the recommended amounts and breakdown in your cabin prior to your last day. You can fill in the amounts you want to tip each person and drop off at guest services and they will charge the tips to your onboard account. They will give you small receipts with the amounts you tipped to put in the tip envelopes. If you prepay your tips, you will also receive those same receipts for the tip envelopes. If you don't want to charge the tips to your onboard account, you may put cash in the envelopes.

First of all, I doubt that any line would shortchange their staff -- the staff would get mad, and start telling passengers to tip in cash directly. It wouldn't be to their benefit.

Disney does have a nice system though. If you use your credit card, you simply take the form to the Guest Services desk, they charge the overall amount and then give you what appear to be tickets for each amount. A stub for you to keep for each person, and the main part for the various people, and they give you envelopes with the various titles on them (server, assistant server, etc.). You can increase or decrease the suggested amounts easily.

On other lines I have been on, the tip is automatic (unless you stop it) and you don't give anything to the people. Disney has a nice system.
