eandj Posted January 1, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 1, 2010 Personally I would not bother with those cards. They are NOT always accepted, even in the states. We only carry cash or a credit card. Extra cash is left in the safe.
Delta Dear Posted January 1, 2010 #3 Share Posted January 1, 2010 Another vote against those pre paid Visa cards. I have had several given to me and they are a real pain to use. I dislike them very much.
kitty9 Posted January 2, 2010 #4 Share Posted January 2, 2010 Another big NO vote. Those things are useless, even here at many places in the US. Don't bother in foreign ports as many places will not accept them.
travlngrl1996 Posted January 2, 2010 #5 Share Posted January 2, 2010 I have never used them but stood behind someone in a local store here in the states and he was given the run around before he was finally told he could not use it. It seems to be too much of a hassle for my taste. So my vote will have to be NO.
yogi2929 Posted January 2, 2010 #6 Share Posted January 2, 2010 If you get a Visa Buxx type card then it is fine. You use those like a debit/credit card. These have your name on it. The ones you can buy in Walmart, etc are not widely accepted because your name is not on it.
GeneHunter Posted January 2, 2010 #7 Share Posted January 2, 2010 I have used AAA Visa Travel Cards with no problem anywhere. When my kids were teens, they both took multiple trips to Europe (with grandmother, German class and International Volleyball play). What was an added bonus, if they needed more money, I could add additional money (in cash at the local AAA office) and the funds were available immediately. I have used it mainly to get local $ from the ATM machines at the Banks. Have use them in Europe, Mexico and Bonaire. Easier to get money from the card than with travelers checks. eandj Posted January 2, 2010 #8 Share Posted January 2, 2010 If the Op is looking for a way to get cash, then get a debit card account at your bank and just load the account with whatever amount you think you want to have at hand. I opened a Capital One high yield money market acct and I use it only for traveling. No fees and I just deposit what I feel I might need during the trip for cash. Especially good for cash conversions in foreign countries. If using a card for Credit purchases, just use a plain credit card. Not a prepaid Visa. Know too, if you want to purchase from a small shop, kiosk etc at some ports, only cash will be accepted.
