Taste of Mexico?

We will be crusing Carnival in May and stopping in Cozumel. It is my understanding that Cozumel is pretty safe to spend the day on our own, has this changed over the past few months?

 

My bride to be has never been to Mexico, I have been a few times. I would like to find a place with a good mole sauce... as silly as that may sound, it's something I crave! I guess I want a good, real, Mexican meal... a few fish tacos at from a street cart might be nice too ;)

 

Also, can anyone suggest some places on or near the "beaten path" that will make for some good photography? Old churches or buildings in general, children at play... just real life not a random fat man with a western shirt and sombreo selling trinkets.
