Ann

you might do well to pack a brolly amongst all that suntan lotion

Just had two days of solid rain, its certainly not cold but very very wet.

Hope it has all gone in time for your cruise tomorrow

Enjoy it we certainly have.

We always just take US$ to the Caribbean, they are accepted everywhere. Make sure you have plenty of small denomination notes ($1 and $5) for tips, drinks, taxis etc. Last December most shops would take credit cards for purchases over $20 or $25.

If you want to tip your cabin steward(ess) and table/wine waiters, we take sterling and some envelopes/thank you cards with us.

You will also need some sterling for drinks etc on the plane. Again if you have small denominations it is helpful!

Back home now so thought l would do an update.

Having arrived at the airport in plenty of time for our departure we were saddened to see five minutes before departure a delay of three hours ! However the ship was still in dock as we arrived hot and sweaty in La Romana. After getting off the coach, we had to quickly book our table for dinner, fill in immigration forms, have photo taken for onboard card, and arrange credit and then another photo call with the ship in the background all before boarding the ship which was looking stunning with all the lights on. Arriving on board minus our suitcase we were quickly taken to our cabin on deck six outside with two single beds. The cabin for us had plenty of room, a large wardrobe, another large cupboard with shelves, and plenty of space under the bed, yes its old and tired and yes the shower curtain sticks to you bum whilst showering but its spotlessly clean and plenty big enough for two. We were very shortly reunited with our luggage as the ship started to make its way out of port.

A quick shower, throw the clothes in the wardrobe and we were up on deck for a bite to eat in the lido at the rear of the ship. Cafeteria style with metal chairs and tables covered in cloths in the evening with candles it was a favourite place to be, watching the waves of the ship and the previous island fading into the background, along with a gentle breeze. A choice of salads hot and cold meals, a roast, pasta and lots of fattening deserts ! Tea, Coffee, water and juice available on self serve. Wine waiters hovering all the time. Beware don’t take your drink in with you and then go queue for meal, we did it once and our drinks had vanished from the table before we got back, on telling the waiter we got an apologetic shrug and more drinks offered ….oh well

We couldn’t keep our eyes open for the sail away, l don’t think we were the only ones looking at the video, only a few on deck, but they were having a good time.

Day one at sea, beware get up early and stake your bed if you want to be around the pool, plenty of space anywhere else but busy here, we spent the day on the top deck, l have a peeling nose to prove it. Again waiters walking round fetching drinks, we went back to the grill bar for lunch, burgers, hot dogs, salads, jacket potatoes and more deserts. Back to sun beds and a flick through the cruise news paper which hits your cabin every night at six. We found there was a tribute to the rat pack and afternoon tea at 2pm so off we went, to the can can lounge, more scones, cakes, biscuits, back to sun beds until about five and then off to cabin for showers and get ready for evening meal. We decided to eat second sitting.

You don’t get to choose who you eat with but they are there for the rest of the week so fingers crossed your holiday companions are nice, ours were lovely, a table for six but two never turned up at all. The meal was good with five courses of three items each to choose from, you could chose less if you wanted. Don’t bother with the cheese, l think it had been out for ages. Evening entertainment in the can can lounge, the show team are fantastic and throw themselves into it, we enjoyed every show every night, moving on from there into the Okalahoma lounge for karaoke and then dancing.

Oh l forget this was captains night and dress up in your finest, yes you can wear a shirt and tie, but why ? how many occasions in this life do you get to go a little overboard ? From the expressions on the faces of the wives accompanying husbands who elected for trouser and shirts over the top….a little disappointed that they missed seeing their hubby in all their splendour, men like seeing women dress up so why the opposing to dressing up for their wives?, its not too hot, your not out of place, hell your in the minority if you don’t, and all that clap trap about luggage allowance and getting it screwed up, that’s what onboard laundry is for : ) dress up and have a ball !!!

Day two St Georges the Spice Island…on this one we did the Thomson’s excursion and was well worth the money, although we didn’t see the lake very well as it threw it down with rain, the waterfall was okay, but you only spend ten minutes here. But the guide was very knowledgeable and we were introduce to lots and lots of spices and the views and smells were incredible

Day three St Lucia…we decided to do our own thing here and walking off the ship into St Lucia through loads and loads of taxi drivers plying there trade and offering to take you on tours around the islands, beware these guys take some shaking off, a polite no didn’t work for us here so we had to be rude and just keep walking and ignoring. After walking round viewing the sites and getting hot and sweaty we made our way back to the ship for lunch. Venturing out again after, we jumped in a taxi (a little quieter by then) and headed for the beach, 40 dollar return and 20 dollar for two beds and a brolly on a fantastic beach, safe in the knowledge the beach attendant had our drivers mobile number and he would forgo half the fee if he did not return to collect us. We were also assured the attendant would get us back to the ship on time, nothing to worry about though as the driver was there promptly on time….just as the heavens opened again!

will finish tomorrow !
