Mailing postcards from the ship?

We are sailing to the Mexican Riviera and would like to send post cards. If we put them in the ship's mail service, do we use American postage or buy stamps in Mexico?

Good question! We were also talking about sending postcards (not that they'd get home before us)

The ship will carry the local countries postage (Mexico) and you need to use that since it will be deposited there and go through that country's system.

I have heard bad stories about mailing cards on a ship. Often it takes weeks or even more before cards were delivered.

My thoughts were to purchase cards on board as well as postage and then I would mail them myself when I got into port. Then I have the assurance that they were mailed.

When we were on the Star last year, DH and I mailed postcards home from each port of call (Cabo, Mazaltan and PV) and none ever arrived. We gave them to the ship's personnel at the service desk. No big deal, but we won't waste the time or the money again. :(
