mrmapt Posted January 26, 2010 #1 Share Posted January 26, 2010 Hi has anyone been there recently? Thinking of going there on our tip in 18 days. Pros - Cons sounds like a nice out of the way place
proy Posted January 26, 2010 #2 Share Posted January 26, 2010 Paya Bay is a beautiful and mostly diserted beach. It is quite far on the east end of the island. The sand there is mostly pebble like instead of the powdery sand at West Bay Beach. If there is no one there, it can feel a little unsafe. There is a great restaurant there at the Paya Bay Resort, and if you eat there, you can have use of their private beach which would feel safer then the main beach. tonppa Posted February 21, 2010 #4 Share Posted February 21, 2010 Easiest way to get there? We were thinking of renting a car.. Can we combine west end beach and paya bay in same day visit? Worth driving all the way?
Rare crewsweeper Posted February 21, 2010 #5 Share Posted February 21, 2010 Car rental would be the way to go, I think Avis or Alamo have kiosks in the airport. You'll probably need a cab to get to the airport, but check with the rental agency on getting you back to your ship. Not to difficult road wise to get to either and to do both depending on the length of visit and how long you linger. Youa re spending a good deal of your time on the road though. So if your cruise stop is short, choose one or the other. You can also query Vicotr Bodden or Rony and see what they'd charge for a "tour" to both of these places. Roatan1 Posted February 21, 2010 #6 Share Posted February 21, 2010 It would certainly be a little more expensive but MUCH less hassle and and time consuming to hire a guide rather than renting a car. By the time you do paperwork and all involved checking a car in and out you will be a bit into your stay. West End/West Bay is about as far away from Paya Bay as you can get and while the Island is only 35 miles or so long as the crow flies the thing is that cars do not fly, even if some taxi drivers try to make them do so. The roads are small and twist and turn around the island so you would be looking at well over an hour trip each way between West End and Paya Bay

Worth driving all the way?[ Hi, just got back from our cruise. We did the Paya Bay resort. we had a great time. They will come pick you up and take you back whenever your ready. They let us use a room to change in and relax if we wanted. We had a great time at the secret cove and the trails. The weather was rainy getting off the bost, then cloudy when we arrived, then the sun came out and it felt great, but we were able to lay out and got some sun. The lunch was "EXCELLENT" the best food I have had in a long time. We had the Wahoo dinner. A lot of the locals broughtfriends by just to eat there. Looking froward to a return visit. :D
Roatanfans Posted February 22, 2010 #8 Share Posted February 22, 2010 Paya Bay is a beautiful place, but if you are only in port for a short time the East end of the island can be a stretch, especially depending on the time of year. Unless things have changed recently you leave the paved road to get to Paya Bay (the last few years the unpaved road is in good shape, some places it's better than the pavement, but 5 years ago it could be an all day event to drive in the rainy season). The area is safe with friendly people and beautiful beaches (we love Camp Bay Beach), but will be pretty empty. If you want to shop or people watch this is not the trip for you. As for renting a car, it's doable, several of the local places can meet you at the dock with a car, but the drive can be an adventure (check to see that things like horns, wipers and headlights work, and that there is a spare tire in good shape should you need it. There are no service stations around, and not much traffic, although people will stop to help you). Good luck and let us know what you decide. Beachbum1944 Posted February 22, 2010 #9 Share Posted February 22, 2010 I think they charge $70 each with a meal included. Did you feel it was worth $140 for 2 to go there? How long of a ride to get there and back? Thanks..............
tonppa Posted February 22, 2010 #10 Share Posted February 22, 2010 yes we don't want to pay 140$ for two persons to spend the day at paya bay. We are on a budget, so we will try to survive with less money... My biggest fear with west end is that it will be too crowded. We love empty beaches
