Port of Galveston special parking

According to the Port of Galveston web site, disabled vets and Purple Heart recipients are eligible for free parking. How does this work? Do you present your documentation as you enter the parking facility or, do you present your documentation at some administration building before entering the facility? What is someone else has dropped you off at the pier with the luggage? Is that possible?

My husband is a disabled vet, and we cruise out of Galveston all the time.If you have someone drop you off at the port this is fine, but if the vehicle doesn't have tags,(disabled vet) it won't be allowed to park in the area. Also the disabled vet parking is different from the regular parking. My husband always drops us off then proceeds to parking,I know they ask him for his I.D, card showing he is a disabled vet.I guess some people try and use the plates,so you will asked to prove you are a disabled vet.Hope you have a great time.I think it is wonderful Texas allows there vets this privledge.

Unless the rules have changed, you do NOT need DV tags. You will need to present either your V.A. ID showing service-connected disability, or your letter from the V.A. that shows your percentage of service connected disability. Here is a quote from the Port of Galveston website:

"Disabled Vets and Purple Heart Recipients: Free parking will be offered upon arrival to applicable persons with valid documentation from the US Government stating that they are a disabled Military Veteran or Purple Heart recipient and a picture ID. Acceptable forms of proof are: DD214, Dept. of Veteran’s Affairs Service Connected ID Card, or Vehicle Registration with Disabled Veteran or Purple Heart designation. Must be presented at the time of arrival. No refunds will be issued after the fact."

You first park at the DV site across from the regular parking entrance. There is a building there with an attendant. Present your paperwork or V.A. ID to the attendant, get a placard to place on your dash, and return to your car with the placard. After placing the placard on your dash and securing your car, again go across the street and catch the bus to the port terminal.

Good luck.
