SF Posted February 5, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2010 Please help us decide which tour: Best of Roatan: Board your air-conditioned transportation for a guided drive to the rugged and less developed East End of the island. Experience the beautiful landscape as you travel along the central ridge of the island looking down at the turquoise waters and coral reef in the distance. Next board an island-style boat and meander through the historic two-mile long Dixon Cove. Capture photos of the island's keys and red mangroves. You will see shipwrecks of the "Tulum" and "Alexander." On a clear day, the mountains of the mainland can be seen about 36 miles away. Your final stop prior to returning to the dock is at YUBU--the Garifuna Experience. Meet members of the Garifuna, descendants of Black Carib Indians who settled here in 1797. They have maintained their lifetyle, culture and language to this day. Watch them perform native music and dance which have changed little over hundreds of years. OR Roatan West End Tour: Board your air-conditioned transportation at the pier for the drive to Carambola Botanical Gardens. As you stroll through forests of ferns, spices, orchids and flowering plants your naturalist guide provides an explanation of the plant species that are encountered during the approximately 45-minute walk. The next stop is the Roatan Butterfly and Birds Garden. Walk through an enclosure containing many species of local butterflies and learn about the different stages of the butterfly's life cycle. Interact with the majestic toucans, surrounded by a beautiful array of exotic plants. Transfer to West End Village and a savor a delicious cup of Honduran coffee or other refreshments and watch the Garifuna Dancers as they perform their important dance called the Punta. There will also be some free time to independently explore or browse the shops in the village prior to departing for a visit to the only cameo manufacturer in the Americas. View classical and modern cameo masterpieces and then peruse the shop for that special souvenir or keepsake cameo before your transfer back to the ship.
