Cruz Bay

What can we hope to find in Cruz Bay, in terms of grocery stores or convenience stores? We're aiming for a pretty significant hike, but short of carrying trail mix from home, don't know how to properly provision ourselves on St. John.

I would try Sparky's for provisions. They sell soda, liquor, and snacks (junk food). Once off the ferry pier, go straight ahead and across the park - Sparky's is right there. You would want a cab to get to the grocery stores on St. John.

 

Otherwise, for more substantial picnic food, you could try the Deli Grotto in Mongoose Junction (a few blocks north of the ferry).

We were planning on walking from the ferry pier to the trailhead leading up to Caneel Hill. I had gotten the impression that this was about a half-mile walk... was I mistaken?

That seems about right. Mongoose Junction will be on your right as you reach the National Park Visitor's Center (stop in and pick up an island map - free!).
