Liquor purchased on board taken onto plane

I wasn't sure where to post this.

If I buy liquor(2 bottles) on board. WHat happens at the airport for the trip home. Can I carry it on the plane? Does it have to go in with checked luggage? The TSA doesn't allow large quantities of liquid. I'll go back on their site.

never mind, got it.

Wow, this probably really killed the alcohol sales on vacations.

HERE IT IS

With the exception of medications, any amount of liquid including alcohol greater than three ounces must be packed in your checked baggage.

Liquids, including alcohol purchased after clearing the security checkpoint are permitted aboard aircraft.

Carrying Alcohol In Your Checked Baggage

Please note, you can’t take alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol content (140 proof), including 95% grain alcohol and 150 proof rum, in your checked luggage.

You may take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70% per person as checked luggage if it’s packaged in a sealable bottle or flask.

Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content are not subject to hazardous materials regulations.

I have first hand experience with this... You must place it in your checked luggage otherwise if you attempt to carry it on it will be confiscated. This is world wide. Placing in in your luggage you risk it breaking so wrap in well as well as place it inside a Zip Lok bag inside a Zip Lok bag.

I flew to New Zealand to board a cruise ship that was sailing back to my home in Queensland Aust via the Pacific Islands. Given this I purchased a $300 bottle of Scotch duty free which was taken from me by the cruise ship and stored. No problem when we sailed back into Australia I walk off the ship with my bottle.

The ship failed its SOLAS Safety Inspection and didnt leave the Embarkation Dock, we sat on board for 3 days unable to get off due to having passed thru immigration. (As side comment the Ship's Captain announced that all accounts with the exception of the casino will be wiped as he said this all bars and shops closed.)

We were then flown by the cruise company back to Australia those of us who originated from there. As I was walking off the ship to be transferred to the Airport I was handed my sealed Duty Free Bag with the bottle.

Arrive at airport sealed bag in hand check in bags.. proceed to customs and "Sorry Sir you cannot take that onboard" I asked if it could be put in my luggage..not possible. I asked if I could phone a couple we met while trapped onboard the ship who lived locally to come and collect it..... Not possible. I told him how much it was worth and was told bad luck so I had to walk away and lose it... didnt even get a taste.

What annoyed me was that instead of putting it in the bins of confiscated items it was put down beside it... it makes me wonder.

At the end of the day it was my fault for losing it, I knew the laws but given that the cancellation announcement was made and less than 2 hrs later I was boarding a Plane and the fact that we had just had our holiday cancelled I wasnt thinking.

Maybe I'll bring some bubblewrap with me. :D

We have brought bottles back a few times and have always packed it in our checked baggage without a problem. We wrap it up in t-shirts and such and pack it in the middle of the suit ecase surrounded by other cloths and such. Yes, it is a risk, but I have never had anything broken. Granted, you can always keep the bubble wrap from the bottles you bring onboard.......

A read about an older man in Germany last year - he chugged his expensive bottle of alcohol instead of handing it over at the security checkpoint. He died of alcohol poisoning a few hours later.

I'd say you made the right choice...

The other fact to consider is it really worth carrying this stuff around half way around the country?

For example. During our last cruise the shop had 2 1 liter bottles of Vodka for $21. It may seem like a good deal until I remembered that I could get 1.75 liter of the same vodka locally for around $18.95 plus tax or about $20.25 total. To me it seemed like a wash.

I did buy the bottles because we just had a short drive home so we didn't have deal with airport security, but I didn't feel like it was such a great deal. I would not have done it if we had to fly just to save a couple of $.

It wasnt the duty free price factor that annoyed me I can buy spirits and beer cheaper on base than I can buy duty free ( on a military base's we can get it tax free) but the fact that it isnt available in Australia well not that I could see it may be available is some of the more upmarket stores in the other states. So when travelling I do not buy on price but rather what I cannot get here. Items like flavoured Tequila's etc.

I live in the most backward state in Australia... We are the only state not to have summer time or daylight saving.. we are the only state not to have 24hr shopping centre's... we are the only state not to be able to buy alcahol in the supermarkets. we were the last state to get slot machine's and they are still very restricted.... we were the last state to get casino's.

The worst problem we face is that when summer time or daylight saving comes in in the border towns one side of the street is an hour behind the other... ok it may be good for new yrs eve but if you live in Qld but work in Nsw you need 2 watches.

My point is getting back to it ...LOL.... That when on holidays I look for unusual drinks that I don't get here. Esp since I have a Second Company that I run that hires out frozen drink machines...(Granita) for adult parties.

Nothing goes down better in 106 deg F heat than frozen ice cocktails. So I use the time oversea's to look for different spirits to bring back and experiment with.

I do pack bubble wrap!:D Last holiday I brought 5 bottles home (fancy liquors) and wrapped each carefully in plastic bags. No problem. I also declare my bottles at customs.

Did Revenue Canada charge you Duty and GTS on the extra bottles?

Kathy:)
