Excursions in Freeport

I am going on the Sensation in July and there are 15 people coming with us that have never been on a cruise before. One of our stops is Freeport. None of us has been here. Any suggestions on excursions. We are all in our 20s so we like adventure! Thanks

Personally I'd do a day pass at the Wyndham, across from the Marketplace. shopping, eateries and (sometimes Music) at the Market Place and a nice beachfront facility at the Wyndham, with local food shacks on the beach. ken

Hi there, we were in Freeport in September on Sensation as well and were'nt interested in any of the excursions offered by Carnival so we ended up going out on our own. Freeport is a cargo port, there is almost nothing touristy around it except a few shops selling souvenirs. (When you dock there you almost think they docked in the wrong spot if you're not forewarned).

What we did is we took a collective van (taxi type of thing) into Lucaya (the touristy area) for about $5 US each with other passengers from the ship. These vans line-up at the pier and when they're full, they leave. It took about 20 minutes in the van to get to Lucaya. Once you're there, the van drops you off in front of the casino, which is part of a hotel. Across the street from there is Lucaya Marketplace, a large marketplace with tons of various shops and restaurants. A very useful shop is a drugstore that sells all kinds of toiletries and over the counter medication for a lot cheaper that it sells for on the ship (great if you forgot anything at home). They also sell all kinds of bottled water, cold drinks and snacks, again at decent prices.

In Lucaya, there is also a nice beach you can get access to from the hotel's grounds. The sand was very fine and white and the water turquoise and very warm. We didn't buy a day pass or anything, we just went to the beach on our own, swam and sat on towels. There are food and drink vendors on the beach as well as watersports operators (for jetskis and parasailing type of things), but we didn't use those. When we were done swimming we went back to the front of the casino to catch a van back to the ship. They only go when they're full so we had to wait about 20 minutes to leave but the area is shaded or you can wait in the casino's air conditioned comfort if you prefer. The cost back to the ship was again $5 USD each, so for about $25 USD we had a nice morning of exploring shops (we didn't buy much though as we're not shoppers) and swimming, plus a large bottle of ice-cold water. (We went back to the ship at lunch time since we weren't in port very long and wanted to make sure we made it back on time).

If you prefer something more organized and active, we heard that Lucaya National Park is great, with kayak tours that take you to spectacular caves and a deserted beach. We almost did this, but it was sooo hot (about 33C the day we were there) that we're glad we didn't as kayaking would have been hell.

Have fun on your cruise!
