Pompeii from Amalfi or Sorrento

We're on the Insignia which will dock in Sorrento on May 4, spend the night, then move to Amalfi in the early AM of the 5th.

 

My question is: We want to do Pompeii on our own one day and then the other day hire a driver for the Amalfi coast. Which port would be easier to get to Pompeii on our own?

It is much easier to get to Pompeii on your own from Sorrento rather than Amalfi. To get to Pompeii from Sorrento, you should take the Curcumvesuviana train. It leaves from the center of Sorrento fairly often (a few times an hour), and takes about 30 minutes to Pompeii. Get off at the Pompeii Scavi stop. The entrance to the ruins is a very short distance away.
