cruisingrus Posted February 22, 2010 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2010 Can't decide whether to do an Athens Walking Tour which some reviews said wastes time with places you can do on your own before actually getting to the Acropolis or pick up a guide at the entrance to the Acropolis. Is it easy to find a guide? Are they knowledgeable? What do they charge? Thanks for any information.

Is it easy to find a guide? Are they knowledgeable? What do they charge? Thanks for any information. Licensed guides are readily available at the entrance. You can take some comfort that they MUST be licensed and display their license clearly. We had a private driver and felt only the need for a guide at the Acropolis. It was 100 euros, but we were a large group of 15, I think there is a small discount for smaller groups. Well worth having a guide here to discirbe history for all the big things and little with ability to ask questions and hear trivia stories and other fun stuff IMHO. One deal with guides everywhere is YMMV, our guide here was probably B, ie very formal and dry, but very infomartive. Get there as early as you can if you are going in the summer as the heat and crowds 30' after opening can be crushing!
ny4cruise Posted February 23, 2010 #3 Share Posted February 23, 2010 Like Chipmaster, we will have a private tour also and the company has arranged a guide for us for the whole day, including the Acropolis. We wanted to be sure that we would have the best choice regarding the “quality” of the guide. Otherwise, you can find a guide at the entrance of the Acropolis for around 100 Euros. All of them are licensed. There is already a thread here where you can find useful information: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1143705
enza Posted March 23, 2010 #4 Share Posted March 23, 2010 Hi, just noticed your post. Could you please provide the name of the company that you booked. This is exactly what we are looking for a licensed tour guide to accompany us for the whole day. Thank you so much
chipmaster Posted March 23, 2010 #5 Share Posted March 23, 2010 We booked with Paul at Greektaxi. They do offer an allday guide to come with you. IMHO not worth it as Dimitri our driver was very good telling us History, teaching us Greek and pointing out the attractions and sharing tidbits of greek / geece trivia. Of course an official guide is likely to be much more informative on more historical stuff. Good luck with your planning. Hi, just noticed your post. MercedMike Posted March 23, 2010 #6 Share Posted March 23, 2010 Well, have you heard about the little girl who was assigned to write a book report on a book about penguins? Her report was only one sentence: "This book taught me more about penguins than I really wanted to know!" Now I am something of a student of ancient Greece and went armed with considerable prior knowledge. Still, I did not think it was necessary to hear QUITE as much as our guide kept telling us at the ACropolis! Frankly, with a good guidebook you can do the whole Antiquities Promenade on your own and learn a great deal, and go at your own pace and see what interests you. And DO NOT miss the new Acropolis Museum. It is very well arranged and signed and there is really no need for a guide in it. Check out our trip report and pictures at http://www.bully4.us/athens.html Have a GREAT cruise!

He arranged for us everything we requested plus a licensed guide to be with us for the whole day. Good luck and enjoy…
