04/04/04 Mercury sailing - anyone else sick?

Just returned from a very nice experience on the Mercury from 4/4 - 4/11. Only problem was that on Friday late afternoon, my wife became sick with one bout of diaherria and massive vomiting - the vomiting lasted from 5:00 Friday ALL NIGHT and well into Saturday. I took her to the medical center Sat a.m. (where signs were posted that all care would be charged to our account) and they gave her IV fluids for several hours, a shot to control nausea, and did blood work and urine screening. The doc said maybe a virus, but all tests were ok. As we were going leaving and offered payment, the nurse said the care was "complimentary".

Anyone else have sickness? Her personal doc said sounds more like food poisoning than a virus????

I had a similar experience on Connie. Was not charged for treatment and I got the impression the Doctor thought it was food poisoning from the specialty restaurant!

We were on the same cruise and had no problem. Could the problem be related to something she ate on Thursday in Cabo? We were very careful in Cabo--had pasta and beer to drink. We were surprised at the number of people we saw ordering things that were more risky. Also, we took the snorkle sail and they served tuna fish sandwiches and guacamole on the boat. We passed.

Although not on the Mercury, I too had a night of throwing up on a 14 day Galaxy cruise 4 years ago. I'm certain it was food poisoning and it had to be from the ship as we had not been in port for 2 days. I didn't go to the medical center - didn't see how I could have gotten down there between trips to the head!! I have had food poisoning before and am sure it was the same thing. I'll never eat breaded fish again...

For anyone worried about this, I forgot to mention in my 4/4 Mercury review, something else new we spotted -- a "waterless" handwashing system at the head of each buffet line -- dispenser for that antibacterial gel that you rub on your hands (and it quickly evaporates). I think cruise lines are at least recognizing the hazards by implementing things like this. We attended a VIP luncheon on a docked HAL ship here in Seattle toward the end of last season and everyone (us and the day's new pax) boarding was given an antibacterial wet hand wipe to use as they stepped on the threshold of the ship. (Can you imagine X handing those out with the champagne goblets? Might kill the mood, LOL)
