Dress up?

Hi again! It's me, the newbie, with yet another question. :)

I'm sailing on the Spirit next month.

I tried to search for it to no avail. Basically, I'd like some veteran's opinions on this. :)

I like to dress up at least one or two nights on a cruise. I understand it's pretty much wear what you want everynight at every restaurant, right?

I'd like to know if there are set nights that some 'might' dress up more. The 'dress up or not' nights? Do these actually happen?

Do you know what nights these occur?

What percentage would you say actually dress up?

I don't want to look silly with a fancy dress on when everyone else is in shorts. I was thinking of packing 2 fancier dresses and then a couple of sundresses. :)

We will probably go dancing almost every night. Can I/should I wear a pretty dress for that too?

Also, what is the White Hot Party? How should I dress for that?

Monte Carlo night? What's that about? Should I go and how should I dress?

Sorry, if my questions are repetative. I really did try to search for it first. :)

There will be a "dress up or not" night offered in one of the main dining rooms or one or more nights (depends on length of cruise). I always take advantage of that opportunity to dress up a bit, plus you can have formal photos made that night as well, if you want! I also like to dress up more when we have dinner at Cagney's or Le Bistro. For us that is a "special" occasion and we like to look nice!

They're perfectly legit questions. You will not be out of place whether you dress in jeans and a polo or a tux (or gown/dress for the ladies). You will be in the minority, but certainly not alone. I'd say most dress up on the DUON night(s), but you can dress up any night you choose. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say 10% or so will be in a suit or tux or dress. The great thing about Freestyle is you can go as formal or (almost) as casual as you'd like.

You'll be fine dancing in whatever is comfortable for you. Check out this thread on the White Hot Party; it has all the info you'll need: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1171383&highlight=white+hot

Monte Carlo Night is a similar event, but held in the casino. It's a good reason for NCL to hold a party in a casino. The focus is less on music and dancing and more on gaming. I believe this event is usually a little earlier in the evening.

Hope this helps.

Generally there will be two "dress up or not nights" on a 7 day cruise. So you can wear your pretty dresses those nights.

As for "..pretty much wear what you want"...they do frown on shorts in the dining room at dinner, so you probably want to avoid that...although on some Caribean cruises they've been lax about that, too.

I'd like to know if there are set nights that some 'might' dress up more. The 'dress up or not' nights? Do these actually happen?

What percentage would you say actually dress up? I think probably well over half do dress up -- not formals, not in tuxes and ball gowns, but at least "going to Sunday meeting" clothes. :)

Sure.

Basically, wear as much white colored clothing as you want. This is not at dinner, but after dinner, in one of the bars/discos. There'll be strobe lights that'll "bounce" off the white clothing, and look...uh...cool... Or so I'm told. Don't know; don't go to these sorts of things.. :o

The recommended dress code does appear on the NCL site....

Hi lbeaty: We were on NCL Jewel for 14 nights this past Oct to Nov. Had a wonderful time! We have been traditional cruises for 25+ years so it took some getting used to the idea of not bringing gowns. We decided to try and it was really fine!! I wore "flowy" pants and 3 dressy tops for the 3 "not formal nights". My DH wore a sport jacket, different shirts and ties...Many people DO dress a little dressier than every night. I'd wear the nice tops w/ slacks during the week as I did on Princess, Celebrity and RCCL. It's no big deal to wear a nice top. etc., when you shower and change for dinner. Made us feel we were 'going to dinner'. DH just wore either nice dockers or slacks and a dress shirts but no ties the other nights. We left from NY but had to fly back from Florida and it was no big deal w/ the dressier pants and his sports jacket didn't take up that much room

It up to you, but we NEVER felt overdressed! We just prefer looking put together for dinner, even if we are home.

Our next one is 11-7-10 on the Explorer, RCCL and we're doing MTD and back to the gown type, flounce pants, etc. We're good with that and can't wait.

Whatever you choose, you will be fine and I don't remember anyone wearing shorts in the regular dining rooms!

Have a wonderful time and enjoy your cruise. Hope my input helped a little!

Thanks everyone! :)

You've been very helpful.

Sounds like I can wear a dress (ever night) if I want to and not look out of place.

I had no intentions of wearing shorts to dinner so no worries there.

Anyone ever do the Spirit 7 day cruise know what nights they normally have the dress up or not nights?

Can I wear something casual to dinner? Do people dress up at night? Can I wear my swimsuit day and night? The answer to all the above is "yes" - with Freestyle Cruising, you're pretty much welcome to wear whatever, whenever. Our philosophy is "resort casual" and with the widest range of dining venues, tons of entertainment options and bars & lounges, you'll find there are places for your style all over our ships, day and night.

Daytime, it's basically all fine since we know you're probably headed to the pool or out for a fun Shore Excursion. Casual shorts, jeans, tops and sundresses are welcome everywhere. You can even wear your swimsuit to the poolside grill or the buffet.

Resort casual dress gets you into every venue at night too. Some people like to add a jacket, or when celebrating a special occasion, get all decked out. This too is welcome everywhere. And if you're tired from a long fun day and just want to wear shorts; our buffet is the place for a casual dinner. Some people prefer nice jeans. They're welcome in many of our restaurants as well, but not in all. It's your vacation on NCL so dress comfortably, and you'll find a venue that suits your style.

Since all suitcases are collected the night before we return home, don't forget to bring an overnight bag packed with a change of clothes, prescriptions and need-to-have items. Thanks to Freestyle Disembarkation, you'll have time on your final morning on board for breakfast and some last minute sunbathing or even a workout.

What to wear for dancing on board can be what ever you would wear at home. I prefer to wear skirts/ tops or dresses for dancing. Love to have a "twirly" skirt.

In the past I've worn slacks or capris on casual nights, but will be switching to skirts/dresses on my next cruise. There are so many dresses in the stores this year and lots of peasant skirts that will be great for dancing and still be casual.

Whatever you wear, enjoy!
