Giantfan13 Posted April 14, 2010 #2 Share Posted April 14, 2010 Most of the cities have several places you can dock. Maybe someone will be able to look it up for you. In Tallinn, you dock at one specific place and it is a wonderful city to walk around in. Look over this site and you will find a wonderful walking tour of Tallinn that most people do. St Petersburg is another port, that really doesn't matter where you dock because you cannot leave the ship without some sort of pre booked tour, either with the ship or private. (Unless you went to the trouble to secure Russian Visa's). As for you other question, we did all the ports on our own except for St Petersburg. Just about every port is easy to do on your own, especially once you get to the main part of the city. That can be done with public transportation. Again, do a search of just read some of the threads on this board on this subject. there are so many threads about what each city has to offer and how to go about seeing it. For ME, I would stay away from any of the ships excursions as they are pricy and you can do much better, see more and enjoy and experience the city much better on your own. Here are a few pix of the cities and what you should hope to see on your own IN Copenhagen, not far from Langeline pier, is this wonderful church on a magnificent setting http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe353.jpg Walking around Copenhagen, you will get to the Main City Square where you will see their City Hall http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe326.jpg Tallinn is just a wonderful city to just roam around in. With narrow cobblestone streets and wonderful little shops http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe587.jpg Doing the walking tour of Tallinn, you will pass this photogenic Church http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europe566.jpg In Helsinki, most people head for Market Square. From here you can head off in several directions and see most of the sights http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster1150.jpg And then there is Stockholm and Gamla Stan, just a marvelous place of narrow streets and so many wonderful shops. http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz267/Giantfan13/baltics/europemaster1275.jpg Cheers Len
sbhdmh Posted April 14, 2010 #3 Share Posted April 14, 2010 Last summer visiting Gothenburg was a disaster. We docked in a HUGE industrial port far from town. MSC provided busses to the entrance of the port but there was no public transportation available from there to town. People who called for taxis reported waiting 45 minutes and being charged 45 euros for the trip into town. MSC ran a shuttle for 12 euros per person but it was so mishandled we had less than 2 hours on shore. It was a total waste. This winter some folks from Gothenburg posted a lot of information about public transportation and things to do. If you can find out where your ship will be docking you can get some very helpful information from that thread. If I had it to do again I would have booked a ship's tour to at least have a chance of seeing something.
