Phone Vending Machines

Does anyone have any experience with cell phone purchase from an airport vending machine? Wondering if FCO (Rome) has one? I am reserching the best way to go with traveling abroad and cell phone usage.

Italian law would not allow this I think. Cell phones (well, actually the SIM card which is the actual "telephone number) needs to be registered. this requires:

a copy of your passport,

the invoice number,

cell phone number,

ICCID number,

address,

signed declaration

Thanks ab0si. That is just the info that I'm looking for. Didn't know if the vending machine would be available in Rome. So I will cross off that option.
