N. Zealand/Mildord Sound tour

On our Princess Cruise to Aust/N. Zealand they offer a chance to take an overland tour of 1 0r 2 nights from Milford sound. Has anyone done this? What do you miss if you give up the scenic cruising? Did you go on the Princess tour or on your own? Did you still get to see a bit of the fjord and Milford Sound beauty before you took off? Thanks for any help!!

Yes. We did the one night onland excursion on the Sapphire in late December and the tour was wonderful despite lots of rain.We were fortunate to have a superb driver/guide called Les who added immeasurably to the experience. The scenery is breathtaking and the accommodation at the golf club in Queenstown was first class.

I believe that ship cruised in and out of the Fjords whilst we were inland but I am pleased that we saw Milford Sound overland.

We did the 1 night overland from the Star 14 day -last (2003/04)Dec./Jan. cruise (Our weather was cool but great!)Expensive but worth it I think - wouldn't have wanted to miss Queenstown etc. etc. You can do it yourselves - but it will take a lot of planning - we were afraid to attempt it on oun own as it was the first time for us in that area and and we couldn't find anyone willing to share the experience so we went with Princess. If I were to go to the area again - and could find 2 other couples to join us - I would attempt it on our own - and do a 2 night overland to meet the ship at Christchurch. (Or the reverse I think would even be a better route.....meet the ship at Milford sound....depends on how your itinerary is going...) Good Luck!

Did you go with Princess or on your own? How many people were on the tour? Did you go by car, van or bus? Thanks!
