timgram Posted May 17, 2010 #1 Share Posted May 17, 2010 My husband and I are booked on Marina's Northern Knights sailing in July 2011. We've never been in the waters in that part of the world- are we more likely to encounter rough seas in the North Sea and Irish Sea? We've been in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas and both times they were as smooth as glass 95% of the time.

timbo89 Posted May 17, 2010 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2010 The North Sea can be the roughest in the world....been there, done that many times.... It can also be relatively calm - it depends....
Druke I Posted May 17, 2010 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2010 The last time we were on the North Sea, Aug 05, it was fairly smooth. The Irish Sea, on the other hand, was quite rough. The are no guarantees upon the water.

Hi Timgram- DH and I, as well as my sister and her DH, and a couple we met on an O cruise last year, are on the same sailing as you and your DH next summer. I've read everything from "smooth as glass" to "ROUGH" describing the water we'll be sailing. One never knows...so be prepared. I'll have Bonine (works fine for me) but hubby will have a prescription patch behind his ear the entire sailing. (as will 1/2 the ship based on previous experience). Last year, he wore it the entire time, even though the Med was like an ice rink.:D If you haven't already, go on our "roll call". You'll find it under the "Roll Call" section: click on Oceania, then click on Marina, then look for July 11 Northern Knights. There's not that much actitivity yet, but we're a little over a year out. It's a nice way to meet fellow cruisers, and share info. As we get closer to sailing, our roll call will get quite active.
funoton Posted May 18, 2010 #7 Share Posted May 18, 2010 Marina is a large ship, you should be okay. Remember sea sick tablets work wonders if the motion bothers you. Starchy foods also help.
Rocket4Oh Posted May 18, 2010 #8 Share Posted May 18, 2010 Marina is a large ship, you should be okay. Remember sea sick tablets work wonders if the motion bothers you. Starchy foods also help. As a 20-year veteran of the navy, I can tell you uncategorically that the North Sea and the North Atlantic at times of the year (esp spring and fall) has a total disregard for the size of a vessel. I have seen water wash over the flight deck of an aircarft carrier. I have seen very large cargo ships with their booms and cranes all bent up from the storms that can rage. I can also tell you that MOST sailors get seasick. Every time we went to sea I got sick for the first day or two. THE best place to be on a ship that's rocking and rolling is on deck with the breeze blowiing across you and the horizon in view. All of that said, cruise ships will do everything in their power to avoid bad weather but sometimes they can't. Go with the boy scout motto and be prepared. If you truly feel that any ocean motion will throw you for a loop and you really won't enjoy yourself then a trans-oceanic cruise ain't for you. Oceans&Rivers Posted May 18, 2010 #9 Share Posted May 18, 2010 Go with the boy scout motto and be prepared. As a former girl scout, I can vouch for the fact that it was our motto, too :) : Unfortunately, my thoroughness in preparation translates to my travel packing and for that reason, among others, I am really looking forward to trying out an Oceania cruise ASAP, one that will require less shopping for and packing of formal garments. For sure, though, we will be on one of the first four Marina voyages and we are really looking forward to it.
