It seems like a shame, to me, to spend so much money to go all the way to Venice only to stay somewhere else. It's kind of like staying in Secaucus when you've gone to New York. Yes, it's cheaper and yes, it's only a half hour away by train, but it's a very different experience.

I agree--and other than the possibility of spending the night before an early flight at the airport Marriott, the last thing I want to do in Europe is stay at a large American chain hotel.

 

Venice has so much charm that it would be a shame to not enjoy it fully after having traveled all that way.
