warning for scuba divers

This topic comes up every year or so. We're of the opinion that dive knives aren't necessary for Carribean or South Pacific dives--having never seen a single strand of kelp or fishing line ever in those areas. (We don't have a lot of Carribean experience but Leo's probably done a couple hundred dives in the South Pacific.)

But it would be interesting to know--has anyone ever had to use a knife to disentangle themselves or for other safety reasons on a cruise ship dive?

My husband and I had problems with security on RCI Adventure of the Seas because of his packed dive knife. They called our room right away and left a message for us to call security. He went down and talked with them about it. They told him he could sign it in and out at every port but he decided that it was too much of a hassle so they kept it until we disembarked. We had no trouble picking it up when we left. I don't think we'll bother bringing a dive knife next cruise.
