There is an SAQ in Vieux-Port on côte de la place d'Armes, basically right across from Basilique Notre-Dame, and about a 300m walk from the terminal. I don't think there is anything at the Iberville cruise terminal itself. It is on the ground floor of Montreal’s first skyscraper, l'Édifice Aldred -- look for the art deco building across from the basilica.

Um.... you are correct about the location of the SAQ, but Montreal's first skyscraper is the New York Life building at 511 Place d'Armes, next door to where the SAQ is located. Eight floors in 1889 (four years after my house was built). See http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/inventaire/fiches/fiche_bat.php?sec=p&num=6

The Aldred building was built in 1929 and finished in 1931. The Royal Bank building is 22 stories and finished in 1928. Aldred was 23 stories, so it was tallest when it was built, but it didn't hold the title for long as the Sun Life building was finished in the same year and was 26 stories.

Salut! They really should correct McGill's School of Architecture syllabus then :-) Teehee. http://www.arch.mcgill.ca/prof/sijpkes/arch304/winter2001/cszasz/aldred/aldred.htm I'm not sure at eight stories if the New York Life Insurance Building really is a 'gratte-ciel'? but I cede to your local knowledge m'sieur. :-)

Do I think it's a skyscraper? NO! But it was at the time. Montreal had a legal limit of 10 stories on buildings at one time... so afraid of building higher. But I hardly see what Aldred would be a big deal, since Sun Life was built around the same time. Those were the last two of the "skyscrapers", since the great depression had already hit by the time they were being built.

The official website for Old Montreal posts this... http://www.vieux.montreal.qc.ca/histoire/eng/metroa.htm

I hope that poor student didn't fail his course. He should have gone down to Old Montreal and taken a photo of the building for the laugh. That's why I remember it so vividly... 8 story building as the first skyscraper... not impressive, somehow.

Incidentally, there is another building in Montreal with an important claim to fame, the Bay downtown was a hotel where Jefferson Davis sent his family during the US Civil War. He visited them, as well. And so, the building has a plaque indicating that Jefferson Davis once slept there.
