Advice - Delos on your own

The NCL Gem will be in port from 8am-4pm. Does anyone have a recommendation about the ship's tour vs going on your own? If we go on our own, how often do the ferries run? If we go on the 4 hour ship's tour, is having a guide much better than going on our own? We want to have time to tour Mykonos on our own as well.

There is ferry information at http://mykonos-accommodation.com/boats-summer.htm and http://mykonos-accommodation.com/local-transportation.htm .

round trip ticket costs 30 Euro. incl. entrance fee for the island.

- from old jetty in town: 3 boats daily:

"Margarita" dep. at 09h50, 11h10 with return from Delos: at 13h30, 15h00.

"Orka" dep. at 09h00, 10h15, 12h50 with return from Delos: 12h20, 13h45.

People who dock on Monday, or in the afternoon, only have the option of a ship's tour. Since you dock in the morning, you can easily catch a ferry, spend several hours on Delos, and still have plenty of time to explore Mykonos. I would allow 2-3 hours for Delos.

I'm usually keen on DIY touring, but Delos is a place where I think it helps a lot to have a guide. There isn't a lot of printed reference material available, and the site has NO signage. You can get a guided tour with the ferry ticket, but that ups the ferry price from 30 to 40 euros, so you might find the ship's tour a better option pricewise and for convenience.

Bear in mind, if you dock at the new Tourlos cruise terminal, you'll have to pay to shuttle or taxi a couple of miles to the ferry dock in town, in order to catch the ferry. (If you anchor near the town, no problem, the ferries leave right by the tender dropoff.) If the ship's tour takes you to Delos directly from the ship and then drops you off in town, it would save you some time and money.
